How do I know which repeaters I might use and their associated membership fees? Thank you** A: Despite what the naysayer ham radio folks are telling you, these are legal as long as you obtain your GMRS license which is $70 and good for 10 years in order to operate on the GMRS frequencies. On certain GMRS frequencies, with a license, you can operate up to 50 watts. These radios can also be programmed at 3 power levels so depending on what frequency you're on, it will be within legal transmit power norms. These are GREAT radios and have crystal clear comms for our church security team usage. Insure you operate on low power on FRS freqs without a license and GRMS freqs. with a license on the higher power ones. Stay off of the ham freqs without a ham license. **Q: I am trying to receive frequencies in the 800mhz range but it will not allow me to enter.** A: You can program these for whatever frequencies you want by downloading CHIRP and modifying the radio drivers with a text editor... Then just change the frequency range to 900mhz or whatever you want... I would not suggest trying to transmit at those frequencies but people have had some success with receiving frequencies out of band that way... You may also want to try an RF downconverter if you would rather go the hardware way instead of the software way... About 5 kilometers in suburban settings. In urban settings, aabout a kilometer or two. In a boat, a bit further than 10kilometers. With the Nagoya extended antenna, you can make 20 kilometers, more or less, on open ground. However, use an external antenna on the roof of a building and you can double that range! Power does increase range. But, antenna increases range far more than more power. **Q: I just got the BF-F8HP and I installed the Nagoya NA-771 from my UV-5R. The 8HP does not like this antenna. Why? Only receiving 1/2 transmissions...** A: Not sure what the problem could be, other then something has happened to the antenna. Does it work well on your UV5R? I would suggest getting a Signal Stick antenna, they are great inexpensive antenna's. Oh, and if the 771 works on your UV5F it should work on your new radio.
