    An excellent guide to assit Shotokan Karate students in learning kata Gankaku and Jion.

I have been involved in the practice and teaching of numerous martial arts for most of my life, with Shotokan Karate being one of my specialties.  On most of the Best Karate kata series with the late Master Masatoshi Nakayama, who was the Chief Instructor of the Japan Karate Association for many years, he shows the movements of three kata.  In this volume he teaches Gankaku and Jion, which are somewhat longer with more steps involved than most of the other Shotokan kata with the exception of Goju Shio Sho and Goju Shio Dai katas.Like all the Best Karate kata series, these kata are shown in specific detail with every move explained.  The photographs are clear and easy to follow;  however, as I have mentioned in my other reviews, one cannot master karate kata or any martial art by merely reading the book and looking at the photographs.  This book when used in combination with actual training under a Shotokan Black Belt instructor will produce excellent results.In conclusion, if you are a serious Shotokan Karate student you should have this book in your personal library to help guide you over the finer points of learning Gankaku and Jion katas.Rating:  5 Stars. I take ISKF karate and this series is our reference manual.  Breaks the kata down step by step and provides multiple perspectives and well and detailed explanation on certain key moves.  The photos also have foot diagrams, which I find is easier to use than videos.
