Solution: Put the cap on when not using it.There are no intermediate extensions. To use, it must be fully extended. I don't have a problem with that. It's very lightweight and feels secure. I'm not at all worried about my iPhone falling.It comes in three pieces. The extendable shaft, the handle with release button, and the frame that holds the phone (or camera). The bonus tripod is the size of three unbent paper clips on a tripod screw. It looks like the shaft used to have a tripod mount at the end to stand the shaft straight up on the tripod. I suspect too many fell over and now there is no place to screw on the tripod.It charges quickly, and I don't know how long a charge lasts. I think the instructions say 55 minutes of charge time and several hours of use.This isn't a cheap item, but its weight and quality construction are worth it. At least to me. It only does one thing, but it does it well. The only thing I cannot do is to take a Video and use the picture feature. The only reason for the 4 stars, and not 5.It comes in a cute black pouch so all the 3 pieces to this doesn't get lost in your purse/man-bag. All you need to do is to clip on the handle and attach the telescoping portion and twist on the holder for the smart phone. Don't do like what I did and try taking the picture backwards! That was really fun... when others were all telling me to turn the phone around! Gee! You think they'd not make such a fuss!After doing the initial setup which it comes with instructions, all you need to do is to hold down the power button until the photo button begins to flash... Since mine's an android, it turns into a solid blue. I read that it would turn green for an iPhone.Then you're all set! First, you must use the stick full extended, you cannot lock it at some intermediate position. As a sub point to that you also cannot lock it closed when you have the holder for the phone attached to the end. There is a rubber gromit to hold it closed, but you must remove the cradle for the phone in order to have that attached, thus you cannot just leave the phone on and toss it into the side pocket. Second the zoom buttons do not function with IOS devices, only android. I used it with a iPhone 5s and iPhone 6. Both were very stable and secure when fully extended and I didn't have any issues with either one rotating on me which was a concern. The unit is well built although the white plastic parts feel like the most flimsy part of the product.
