Needed something like this to keep a furnace condensate drain line from freezing. The drain is a clear flexible plastic tubing and I was worried about too much heat and damage, but this is the perfect fix. It keeps the line at a nice temperature and with a small amount of wattage used and is warm to the touch. Not excessive . I enclosed the drain line and the heater line in a foam type insulation and it works well. The automatic thermostat has worked perfectly so far. Nice to have peace of mind knowing the line won’t freeze up anymore. This unit looks and feels well made for the price.

I purchased three of these cables, primarily to keep an outdoor cat waterer from freezing so my barn cat has accessible water. The waterer is enclosed in an insulated box to keep the heat in; with the cables wrapped around the water reservoir and the bowl. Went through last winter and never froze up, even when temps went to -10F. Good product. The neon light on the plug is to tell you the cable has power; not to indicate that the cable is actually heating. Also, you CAN use an extension cord with the heat cable; a 16 gauge heavy-duty outdoor-rated cord can easily handle even the longest heat cable (5 watts per foot x 160 feet = 800 watts. A 16 gauge cord can handle 1200 watts). I have an extension cord on mine and never have had a problem.
