## Description

The critically acclaimed international bestselling novel by one of Japan's premier storytellers, Keigo Higashino's The Devotion of Suspect X marks the first book in his beloved Detective Galileo mysteries. "One of the great mystery and thriller books of all time!" ( Time ) Yasuko Hanaoka is a divorced, single mother who thought she had finally escaped her abusive ex-husband Togashi. When he shows up one day to extort money from her, threatening both her and her teenaged daughter Misato, the situation quickly escalates into violence and Togashi ends up dead on her apartment floor. Overhearing the commotion, Yasuko's next door neighbor, middle-aged high school mathematics teacher Ishigami, offers his help, disposing not only of the body but plotting the cover-up step-by-step. When the body turns up and is identified, Detective Kusanagi draws the case and Yasuko comes under suspicion. Kusanagi is unable to find any obvious holes in Yasuko's manufactured alibi and yet is still sure that there's something wrong. Kusanagi brings in Dr. Manabu Yukawa, a physicist and college friend who frequently consults with the police. Yukawa, known to the police by the nickname Professor Galileo, went to college with Ishigami. After meeting up with him again, Yukawa is convinced that Ishigami had something to do with the murder. What ensues is a high level battle of wits, as Ishigami tries to protect Yasuko by outmaneuvering and outthinking Yukawa, who faces his most clever and determined opponent yet.

Review: A Masterpiece - Keigo Higashino’s The Devotion of Suspect X completely flipped my expectations of a mystery novel. Unlike Agatha Christie, who keeps you guessing about the identity of the culprit until the very end, Higashino tells you upfront who the suspect is. And yet, the suspense doesn’t fade—instead, it only deepens. You’re left wondering how the investigation will play out, and that’s where the genius of this novel lies. From the start, I was hooked by how brilliantly the story unfolded. Ishigami, the math teacher at the center of it all, is far more than he seems. The way he manipulates not just the investigators but also the reader is pure genius. I found myself second-guessing every assumption I made, only to realize that Ishigami had been ten steps ahead the entire time. By the end, I was screaming internally, utterly caught off guard by the twists and turns. What really surprised me was how much I ended up sympathizing with Ishigami. His intellect and quiet devotion made it impossible not to root for him, even knowing what he’d done. I was torn between wanting justice and wanting him to succeed in his meticulous plans. Higashino crafted such a complex character that I couldn’t help but take his side, which left me with a mix of emotions long after I finished the book. If you’re looking for a mystery that’s not just about solving a crime but also about understanding the depths of human nature, The Devotion of Suspect X is a must-read. It’s one of those rare books that will keep you thinking, guessing, and feeling long after you’ve turned the last page.
Review: A different sort of thriller - A novel that is part psychological profile, part murder mystery, Keigo Higashino’s The Devotion of Suspect X is a masterfully written novel. The novel, originally published in 2005 and translated into English in 2011, is a standout in the world of mystery fiction, offering a plot that is both intellectually stimulating and emotionally resonant. We have three central characters: Ishigami, a brilliant but socially isolated mathematician; Yasuko Hanaoka, a single mother trying to escape her abusive ex-husband; and Yukawa, a physicist and college friend of Ishigami, who becomes involved in the investigation of a murder. When Yasuko's ex-husband, Togashi, shows up at her doorstep and threatens her, a violent confrontation ensues, leading to his death. Ishigami, who is secretly in love with Yasuko, offers to help her cover up the crime, devising a seemingly foolproof plan to mislead the police. While the tone of the novel starts out as a Christie-like cozy, it rapidly turns into a dark noir. Higashino’s narrative is a fascinating exploration of logic and emotion, presenting a battle of wits between Ishigami and Yukawa. The novel’s brilliance lies in its ability to subvert the reader’s expectations; what appears to be a straightforward whodunit quickly evolves into a much deeper and more complex story. The tension between the characters is palpable, and Higashino skillfully explores themes of unrequited love, sacrifice, and the moral dilemmas faced by ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances. The pacing of the novel is meticulous, with each revelation peeling back another layer of the mystery, culminating in a shocking and tragic conclusion that lingers long after the final page. Higashino’s translated prose, though straightforward, is effective in conveying the inner turmoil of his characters. Overall, a very engaging. it will be interesting on how this compares to the rest of the series.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ It's My First But Won't Be the Last Novel by Keigo Higashino That I Read
*by E***S on June 27, 2024*

This is the first book I've read by Keigo Higashino and it won't be my last. It's a very complex story. While I guessed about half way through what one of the characters was going to do by the book's end, I didn't guess his reason. This was critical, not only to the story itself, but to the joy of reading this book. I read "The Devotion of Suspect X" (Devotion) because it was assigned in a class I'm taking. As the professor anticipated, several of us taking the class were bound to read ahead. That was certainly true for me. The story was so compelling that I read it in a couple of days. My reviews are completely for myself, to help me remember what I liked about a book, and to jot down key impressions. The book's professionally written description will tell you what I would have said to describe it. Read it to help you decide if you want to read it. All I will say is that if you enjoy a complex murder mystery, you'll enjoy this book as much as I did. I've already bought a couple of other books by Higashino so that I have them on my shelf when I'm ready to read another mystery. That's going to be very soon based on my reading of Devotion. One note about translations: "The Devotion of Suspect X" was translated by Alexander O. Smith. I've found that the quality of the translation makes a huge difference to me, especially when it came to books written in Japanese. I've read other Japanese book translations and found the writing to be dull and simplistic, lacking metaphors, similes, and even descriptive adjectives. Japanese is, in fact, a beautiful language, full of gorgeous imagery. Read a few pages to see if the translation you are thinking about reading is of the quality you're expecting.
