I figured it would be a simple carb clean, or plug change, and it would fire up. Well, after further inspection, there was a hole in the piston (looking through the spark plug hole I could see this). I figured it was trash, until I did some searching and found this motor replacement. For $40, I said what the heck, why not. $40 investment into a new saw? Sure. I’ve never worked on chainsaws before, let alone swapped a motor on one, but I figured with the help of YouTube Academy, I could manage. The swap is straight forward, just make sure you label and bag all of your bolts. Use the new motor mount bolts, and ignition mount bolts that come with the new engine, as they are a different thread pitch than the originals. Also, the guides say to take the handle off to disassemble pull out the old motor. The reason is because there is one lower motor mount bolt that you can’t access because the handle is in the way. Try getting the handle plugs out, they are impossible! Let alone the rubber grommets. I got 3 plugs out and decided there has to be a better way. So I pondered for a second, and then I saw my step drill bit. Make a small access hole in the underside of the bottom of the handle to access the last motor mount bolt. It only needs to be big enough to fit your T25 bit through, and doesn’t affect the structural integrity at all. This was much easier! Don’t worry about getting the bolt all the way through the access hole, it’s accessible from the side and will fall out. Now you can change the engine without removing the handle! As far as the engine goes - I also had changed the carb, fuel tank feed hose and fuel filter and I had kinked the fuel line which wasn’t giving the carb fuel. Once I realized this, the engine fired right up and now starts on one or two pulls. Well worth the investment! I put one on a ms170. Works great **Q: Once I replace the engine, what is the torque setting for the nut mounting the fly wheel onto the engine?** A: Do not use any type of impact, must be done by torque wrench, by hand. Torque’s are determined by such specifications. **Q: Do you have a 40mm motor?** A: My MS180 runs like a top after installing this kit **Q: Do you need to buy gaskets?** A: I installed this in my ms 180 c as it was shipped.
