Can I smash it with a hammer to fit in my tiny sponge filter?** A: I believe it should fit in the container(s). As I understand it, unlike sponge filter media, the bio media doesn't need to "fill" the container. **Q: Can a different sponge with similar dimensions be added to this filter? I'd like to use one with less parts per million, or a more porous sponge.** A: You can replace the black sponges with any sponge that you can slide over the intake tubes. I took Aquaclear Foam Inserts and using scissors made a slit that fit over the intake tubes. Made for better filtration and easy to clean and reuse. **Q: Where can replacement sponges be found?** A: Online amzon **Q: Has anyone connected a powerhead to this sponge filter? i know i will need to cap off the airline. do i need an adapter to connect it?** A: I haven't but I purchased 2 of these sponge filters and connected them to a vivoson air filter and it works great. As far as modifying this sponge filter I'm not sure if its possible due to the cheap plastic material. It’s brilliant! I had a small colony of shrimp and they immediately moved into it and seem to love it. Tank water is crystal clear and well aerated. Cant believe that something so cheap can have such an effect on my tank. I would highly recommend anyone giving one of these a try.
