## Overview

The SHAPTON GlassStone 500 is a premium 500-grit sharpening stone crafted in Japan, designed for fast, efficient honing of knives and tools without the hassle of soaking. Its dense, uniform abrasive particles ensure consistent sharpening performance, while its compact size and durable ceramic-corundum build make it a reliable tool for professionals and enthusiasts alike.

## Description

The Shapton 500 is a medium grit that quickly sharpens dull knives, tools and razors. You do not have to soak this stone in water before using it, just splash on a little water and start sharpening. There are three reasons Shapton Stones work so well. First, Shapton carefully grades the particle size of each grit. Second, Shapton stones have a very high density of those particles. Third, the key aspect of Shapton Glass Stones is the high degree of uniformity in the distribution of the particles. The even particle distribution results in fast honing at every grit level. This combination of uniform particle size and the dense, even distribution of those particles results in fast honing and durability.

Review: The Sharpening Expert's Stones - I've been using Shapton Glass Stones since about 2009, I think. They are excellent. They make sharpening very enjoyable. I do it as one of my favorite hobbies and I'm good enough at it now that other people can't even understand the heights of expertise I've reached. But people do often notice the unique appearance of my edges and when I can accomplish tasks that they can't, like cutting through thick zip-ties. I have 10 Shapton Glass Stones, the lapping plate and stone holder. I intend to complete the set, sooner or later. I do use all of the stones I have. For touch-ups I just use the higher grits, but I often find use for the coarse stones too. Being able to progress through all of the grits makes getting a fantastic edge faster and preserves all of the stones, because you aren't stuck making a big jump in coarseness and overworking a stone that is more fine than is ideal. The Shapton diamond lapping plate is necessary to get the full advantage of using these stones. You might get by with a cheaper diamond lapping plate though. If you want to master sharpening, Shapton Glass Stones are a great choice to get you there.
Review: High quality, good price - Haven't used a ton but cuts pretty quick and wears pretty slow. It does release particles, much faster than the finer grits but slow for a 500 IMO. It does seem too leave a nice finish for 500 also. It's a good all-around coarse stone. Should last a while, even though it's only 5mm.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: what brand of flattening stone will work well with these stones?**
A: I use the Shapton diamond truing stone.

**Q: Is this the 10mm version or the 5? (Abrasive layer)**
A: This is 5mm

**Q: What does HR mean?**
A: It means high resist .

**Q: What is the lap stone used for?**
A: The lapping stone is used for flattening the stone. And the reason we flatten the stone is in pursuit of the perfect edge. So it is not 100% needed. You can use sandpaper and a piece of flat granit tile but it is more of a pain and the cost of sand paper does add up.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great stone but be aware of what you're getting.
*by J***. on March 8, 2019*

The entire Shapton Glass series is great. This is a great grit for rebuilding an edge and I use it as part of a progression: 500 -> 1000 -> 4000. This stone is "splash and go" which means not having to deal with the hassle of soaking stones. This stone doesn't feel like traditional stones. This stone is very, very hard and doesn't give a lot of feedback. It's thin relative to other brands but it'll last as long if not longer. It's so hard it doesn't dish very much, you'll want a diamond stone to flatten it when you eventually need to.
