I found that if I give it a twist and pull, it opens, and then you have to get in there and peel it out. Once it's in hand, it starts out sort of plastic-rubbery and then it warms up and becomes very pliable and fun to use. It's an interesting transition for kids to discover. My children and I have opened several and they are one solid color. I also should have been more observant on the size of these tins. They're very very small. My kids only complained about the colors not being "swirly" LOL and that the tins are very difficult to open. Other than that they seem to love them. I really like that this putty doesn't dry out. My oldest daughter has major fidget issues with her ADHD and this putty helps her focus, calm down and entertains her for hours.
