The pockets seem a bit shallower than other shorts I have, but they hold my phone and keys just fine. The waistband is a wide elastic and there is a drawstring but I did not need to tie it. The material is more of a semi-stretchy nylon and is very thin and lightweight. The small zipper pocket on the side is a nice touch to make it easy to stash car keys or other valuables while working out. I like the fact that there is a fake fly on the front, which adds just enough formality to wear these to casual places without looking like you are wearing workout shorts.
