## Description

Despite the camouflage spots in their fur, giraffes do not always remain undetected by predators. But they know to defend themselves and can kick really hard with their front hooves. They mainly do this if they want to protect their young, because the adult animals are normally rarely attacked. Anyone who has the opportunity to look at giraffes from close up can easily distinguish the females from the males. They are somewhat smaller and have thin horns with a small tuft of fur on top. Giraffe bulls, in contrast, have thick horns with no fur on top.
At a height of more than 1.8 meters and weighing in at more than a ton, bison are trully powerful mammals with curved horns. Bison live in the prairie and feed on different types of plants. The fact that they are herbivores makes no difference to their temper. Bison are known for their aggressiveness and despite their size are surprisingly agile. Bison graze mornings and evenings and doze during the day. Just like rhinos they enjoy rolling in dust or mud. Bisons live together in herds, looking out for wolves and defending the cows and calves against approaching enemies.
On the first glance, spotted hyenas look like oversized dogs. Striking are their long necks, powerful skull, brown spots on a yellowish-brown coat and the sloping topline. This is why hyenas always look as if they ducked. Their appearance helped these predators to their bad reputation. To human observers, they often seem threatening and insidious. Indeed spotted hyenas are the most successful hunters of the African savannah. At dusk they prey on larger ungulates, but they also do not despise small animals, such as insects or reptiles. Sometimes they also take the prey of other predators, such as lions or leopards. Hyenas eat their prey completely, because they can even digest their bones. Only hairs are regurgitated again. Hyenas live in packs of up to 80 animals, always headed by a dominant female.
The alligator is a dangerous predator with exceptionally strong jaw muscles. Only the white shark can bite harder than him. The interesting thing: Only the muscles that close the jaws are extremely strong. The muscles that open the snout are so weak that they can be closed with simple tape. Compared to the saltwater crocodile, alligators are smaller and much wider. They live only in rivers and lakes in the south-eastern part of the United States and China.
