Vinegar, soap and smell but it sure works well. I have a kitchen compost bin that generates fruit flies but this keeps them at bay. **Q: What does this product smell like?** A: The product has a slight acidic smell, I guess. I never noticed until I smelled the container. This product really works!! I have tried other products, but this is the best one I have found. I have issues every year, it seems like. This is at least the 3rd bottle I have purchased. I do not have fresh fruit around the house, so I don't know what starts the fruit flies, but they are a problem. I think they last about 3 - 4 weeks and then are gone. They seem to start outside my condo building and then get inside despite my best efforts to not let them in. So...I recommend this product. **Q: Will this work on drain flies?** A: I'm sorry, no. Bye Bye Fruit Fly is formulated specifically for fruit flies and will not attract drain flies. I bought it to refill tarro apple looking traps. You can open those traps btw and reuse them.Yes, this stuff stinks like vinegar. It has acetic acid in it, which is what gives vinegar its smell.Vinegar is made from alcohol, alcohol is made from sugar fermenting. Fruit flies love sugar so it makes sense they are attracted to the acetic acid, it's a by product of sugar and decay. Flies love decay too if you haven't noticed.After reading more online, only hungry fruit flies are attracted to acetic acid. They'll all be hungry eventually!They get stuck in the stuff. If you don't have a trap you can pour it in a tiny dish, it will work.If you take care of the source of the fruit flies, you can stop using this stinky stuff. Get a drain killer for fruit flies. They love leaving their larvae in drains. It could also be your garbage.
