Positioned properly it will give bright light over a wide area. The blue night light can be a bit bright for some settings but it is a very functional night light for hallways or other areas that need to have some decent illumination for night time hours. If you are using it in a sleeping area you will want to be careful with placement because of the brightness of the night light. We have not had these long enough to test how long the batteries will last. Other brands we've used have had fairly quick battery death. We will try to remember to pull them from their outlets every once in a while so there are no surprised when an actual outage happens. We found out about failed batteries on our previous brand the hard way. However, the actual construction of the light is on the cheap side.. The control button easily falls off and can't be fixed. I few of these purchased recently have failed in the first few months.. Though the package states 3 YEAR warranty, the manufacturer seems to only want to talk about 3 MONTH warranty. So the concept is GREAT... but will the one you get actually work and for how long ? First, an annoyance -- the minimal instructions on the back of the plastic packaging were partially obstructed with their stupid sticker that has the model number, which is what's also listed on the unit itself. So that was unnecessary and I couldn't read how to slide the button for which function. Second, the deal killer was when I did slide the button, it somehow broke or fell out of the tiny on/off/auto button opening. I tried to put it back in but it seems that it's broken, although I don't see where, how or why. I won't be getting a replacement, since this lasted less than 5 minutes in my hands and wasn't usable.
