Review: Sound is good. Reliability is not so good. - As far as a single head tape-echo simulation goes, the pedal sounds good. Very nice vintage rock'n'roll sound. Spacey impressionistic sounds are also possible with the volume (read mix) at higher levels, but the single head sim doesn't provide much room to hide. The modulation (read tape age) feature is subtle enough to be difficult to A/B with simple test sounds, but becomes more apparent and desirable when used for longer periods of actual playing. The bonus flanger-like sound with the time and repeat controls turned down is a bonus. However, the pedal has not one, but two fatal flaws that make this either just a toy, or a very specialized effect. The first flaw, mentioned by many reviewers is the noticable drop in volume when the pedal is engaged. It is to such an extent that the pedal can really only be used as an always-on device, which defeats the purpose of making it true-bypass. Turn the volume (mix) down and there is no effect added to the signal. This is the only way to avoid signal loss on engagement. Few players keep a pedal within hand-reach, but that seems to be the only option if the effect is to be engaged mid-performance. That, however, is not the pedal's biggest fault. As mentioned elsewhere, in certain circumstances, the pedal will simply shut down, despite the active lamp being engaged. The only way to reset the pedal is to unplug the power cable, and plug it in again. After doing that, it's back to normal. The first time the pedal shut down was during an extreme use situation with both the volume (mix) and repeat controls on max. Although annoying, it is not terribly difficult to avoid this situation. However, I recently discovered a second way to trigger the shut-down. The oddity being that the second trigger condition does not shut the pedal down 100% of the time. Using a single source power supply for multiple effect pedals, sometimes the pedal powers up in shut-down "mode" when the common electrical source is engaged. This situation has become more common after owning the pedal for around two months. Again, unplugging the power cable from the pedal and plugging it back in resets the device, but neither of these auto-shut-down scenarios inspire much confidence in the device for live performance or recording situations. Simply put, one should not need to reboot their echo pedal. The problem would seem to be a very low tolerance for fluctuations in the 9V current. A dedicated power adapter might aleviate this weakness, but for many adding another wall-wart to already limited power outlet space defeats one of the many purposes for using a single source power supply. The single pedal version of the Boss RE-201 is starting to look like a much better option. Perhaps TC Electronic should stick to tuners. They are excellent at that.
