I thought of bringing a Lifestraw but the convenience of having a "bottle" was desired and the Lifestraw would be overkill for states with drinkable water. So far we have used this a few times whilst on vacation and it has worked great….removed all the chlorine taste/smell and we simply used it in the room from the sink….we also used it to fill an empty water bottle to take with us while sight seeing and shopping. Overall this is a great and needed item to travel with; it's so light so packing it was a breeze and we simply dried it out upon our return before the next trip. Extra filters are also readily available and the price of these bottles is very affordable so we are planning to give these as gifts to friends who travel….great addition!!! ### ⭐⭐⭐ Good Filter; Unreliable Seal Causes Leaks *by C***S on November 19, 2014* After a year or so of use the filtration system seems great. If that were the only consideration, I would give the water bottle 5 stars. However, every so often I go to take a swig and water will gush over my face and down the front of my shirt. This happens because the rubber seal is unreliable and to get good flow you need to tip up the bottle, suck on the nozzle, and squeeze the bottle at the same time (he he). The pressure you're creating in the bottle as you're trying to drink plus the seal failure can be pretty explosive. Mine is upright all the time and I imagine that if you were using the bottle in circumstances where the bottle was not upright all the time, the seal failure could be even more annoying. The rubber seal is also really awkward to put back in place so it works correctly. An unfolded paper clip is my go to tool.So 3 stars: I like the filtration and the concept, and I'm sticking with it, but I'm sick of the leaks and wouldn't buy again. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I'm pleased to report no gut issues after two weeks *by R***D on September 27, 2015* Works as designed/advertised for back country safe water. For comparison I've used the "Bota" nesting filter in a soft-sided Nalgene bottle for almost ten years with not one ill effect, but Bota is now out of business. I've now used the Oko on a five-day backpacking trip getting all of my water out of small lakes and tarns, one of which was used by dogs and humans for swimming. I'm pleased to report no gut issues after two weeks. If you have experience with the Bota, the Oko takes less effort to force the water out and it's every bit as easy to use. Using both hands is still the way to go but if the bottle is full, one hand can fairly easily force a few swallows out. Up next is discovering how long before the bottle splits, I'm sure it will eventually, and how long until the filter is clogged enough that two hands isn't enough to squeeze the water out. There is no way to back-flush the element so when it's clogged, it's pretty much lived its life.The Oko is just as effective as the Bota at eliminating bad flavor in the water. From every water source I got water, it tasted spring-pure. Check out the company's web site for an impressive demonstration video on its filtering effectiveness.I've also used the Sawyer squeeze-bag/filter device and to be honest, I'm not a fan of it. I do like the ability to back-flush the Sawyer but the bags come apart at the neck seam fairly easily when squeezed too hard, which is easy to do when you're in a hurry. Also, the bags are almost impossible to fill by dunking in still water, they simply collapse on themselves. If I have to carry a "dirty" bottle simply to fill the bag, I'll choose to carry the Oko. When you've got flowing water, especially little pour-overs, the bags are simple to fill. The Oko is easily to fill in any water unless it's really shallow.One word of caution, when empty the bottle is quite top-heavy so take care when setting it down on an open slope. With nothing to stop it, it will be gone in a flash.
