If you don't, you will not have enough room for a standard screwdriver or impact drill. I followed the original instructions carefully and almost messed up the screws from having to work at an angle (and was not able to securely fasten some of them). Wasted a lot of time on something that's supposed to be quite simple.The end result is a bookshelf with a slight hunchback that required a few coins under piece number 3 to keep it fully upright.
