I must admit that it rapidly absorbs water. It has a lovely "feel," no unusual odors (such as moldiness) either. There is just one problem. I had to take it outdoors and use a hammer and chisel and face mask to get the approximate amount I needed for a 10 x 20 microgreen tray! Messy, inconvenient, etc. I really wish I had been warned about buying a bulk product which is so very very hard and impossible to break into pieces. For those who do want to use the entire block at one time, however, like in an outdoor garden, there would be no problem at all. Meanwhile, my microgreens do love the product. I am writing this warning as I look for this same product in smaller sizes suitable to my needs! I feel this product is VERY clean, a quality which is not easy to find. I do 5 parts of this product, 1 part compost, 1 part rice hulls or perlite. It is mild enough to start seeds or take plants full-term. It is a high porosity product meaning that it drains freely, but you have to water it more often.
