A few years back I had purchased Chinese non-Makita NiCd replacements and they were dead also...actually they were out-lasted by one of my original 1988 Makita NiCd batteries. In the mean time I've had good experience with NiMH batteries outlasting and providing better "Umph" than NiCds, so I took a chance on one of the Makita 9034s.Wow! Major increase in power and discharge capacity over my NiCds, but you do need to get a new charger for the batteries...I bought Makita's DC1804T charger, and it works for both my remaining NiCd and the new NiMH. I also have a small 3 1/4" Makita tile saw 4190D that I use all the time for blind cutting into drywall and trimming boards...it's my GO-TO small saw, and it takes the same 9.6v battery as my drill. The new NiMH battery is a MAJOR improvement on the saws ability to cut thru long difficult blind cuts....it's like an all-new saw.Bottom Line: I discarded my remaining NiCd battery and bought a second Makita 9.6 v NiMH battery for use when one is charging. I highly recommend the switch to NiMH...huge improvement in tool performance.BTW...the required new DC1804 charger is larger than Makita's original NiCd charger...so it didn't fit in my Makita Drill carrying case. But my case is so old that its metal with metal dividers, so I was able to move the dividers over and get the new charger to fit nicely in the case with the drill. They were very much heavier and more cumbersome than my old Makita drills. What a great relief it was to find these new higher powered and better memory NiMH batteries. I ordered them and the new Makita DC1804 charger from Amazon and got them quite quickly. They have been working very very well thus far. I took back the new very heavy drills and am very pleased that I can now use my much lighter and less cumbersome 9.6 volt Makita drills again.
