## Description

Product description

Review: Very Sturdy, Quality Made! - The Defy Desk is a great addition for those who has a table or desk without a keyboard tray and wants the sturdiness and high quality from a product. For my case, I use it for a counter and have a height adjustable workbench chair. The product has a strong heavy quality feel to it. The assembly is pretty easy with the provided tool. The black finish does not hide the fact that the tray is made of a sturdy wood because you can feel the texture and solidness. The key quality I love is that moving the tray forward or backward has a strong enough friction to slide it without having to worry that it'll slide during use. It does not budge after sliding it to the desired position. The width of the tray is enough for a 15" wide keyboard w/ keypad and a mouse (although the picture shown in desertcart gives the perception that there is more space - showing an 11" wide Apple keyboard and two small devices in each side). However, I am able move my keyboard to the back of the tray to write on a small notepad or post-it. Lastly, there are other products that enticed me due to the ability to adjust the angle of the tray, but I believe that will contribute to being less sturdy. The Defy Desk is SIMPLY STURDY and WELL BUILT that I won't hesitate buying another one so I don't need to move it around (so far, I have no intention to unmount and mount it elsewhere, but it's a nice feature to have, especially if I ever want to do so). And it tucks away when sliding the entire tray under my counter. The clamps that holds the tray on the table does take a very little table space away, but it does not bother me at all. Oh, and I want to mention that I support and love quality products made by a family-owned small business. Way to go for making a product worth treasuring and making working-from-home much more productive and comfortable!
Review: Sturdy, sleek keyboard tray - It's hard to navigate the choices around keyboard trays. Some are designed for standing desks and hang 6"+ below the desk which wouldn't work for sitting. This one is great. People complain about the installation instructions but I didn't find them all that confusing. It took about 15 minutes to install it and I needed a Phillips screwdriver and the included Allen wrench. The clamps take up 2.75" square on each side of the desk. The top/shelf of the keyboard tray is 2.75" below the bottom of the desk. Sitting at a 28" high desk, I have 3" of room between my legs and the bottom of the tray. Your distance may vary. Pros: —— Sturdy – It feels like it's not going anywhere. No shake, no worries about it coming loose. Sleek – I like the all-black design. It has a matte finish so it's not shiny. Large – I can easily fit my wireless (Apple Magic) keyboard and wireless mouse and still have about 4" on each side. Textured surface – my keyboard doesn't slide around. I can use the mouse without a mouse pad just fine. Cons: —— Limited features – It doesn't tilt, raise or lower. I didn't expect it to but it's a very basic keyboard tray. Stiff – the tray slides in and out but it's not smooth. You have to apply some pressure to move it. I guess that's good since it doesn't move on it's own or from a light/accidental touch.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: My drawer constantly slides under while working? Does anyone have a solution to keeping it open while working--the moving drawer defeats ergonomics.**
A: I've been experimenting with using a large binder clip (like this https://www.amazon.com/Extra-Binder-Clamps-Office-Supplies/dp/B07GGSDFVY/ref=sr_1_10?keywords=binder+clip&qid=1553053433&s=gateway&sr=8-10) that I clamp onto the slider under the desk. It keeps the arm from sliding forward. It's been working fine so far, though I have to remember to remove the clip when I want to slide the tray under for the night.

**Q: How much of a lip does this require in order to clamp on? In other words, how deep is the top tab?**
A: About 2.75 inches

**Q: How wide is the circle on the clamp? My table only has a 1 inch lip to attach to. The thickness is 2 inches. Will this work?**
A: I would be concerned with only having 1-inch for it to clamp to. It would just barely have enough space to clamp to. The clap opens to about 2 &3/4 wide so the 2-inch thickness is fine. I am enjoying mine.

**Q: Will this work on a cubi desk where the desk frame is running. will the clamp be able to fasten to the desk?**
A: This will attach to any flat surface. It is really high quality and the bottom pads can be rotated.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Well built! SOLID PLASTIC tray, NO particle board. MODIFICATION required for proper fit & ergonomics
*by C***S on December 15, 2021*

I saw someone praising this "Defy Desk" brand in a review of one of the multitudes of knock-off products (you know—the ones where they steal photos from a real brand). After locating this American-made family-run business, I read every single review, analyzed the photos, and noted the various complaints—even those found within the 4-star reviews. The CHIEF COMPLAINT that I was seeing (repeatedly) was the shortage of vertical space between the tray and the underside of the table-for the keyboard, mouse, and your hands. The reviews also mentioned two small, what I consider "nuisance" complaints: 1) The "backstop" not going all the way across the back of the tray (so the mouse pushes back and falls off the tray) 2) The tray rolling back in while typing I figured I could find ways to remedy those minor issues. What I was looking for was a STURDY, quality build, a tray that doesn't "bounce" while you type. I did some measuring, and took the $79.99 chance. When it arrived, I was immediately impressed at how well it was packaged in the manufacturer's box. And it was heavy! I carefully removed the parts and was relieved to find a very thick SOLID PLASTIC tray: ¾" thick! (It is NOT particle board/MDF as some recent fake negative reviews state.) >> PROS It's very sturdy, definitely won't "bounce" or shake when typing. Metal roller bearings in the metal slider tracks for a smooth glide. Hefty machined aluminum powder-coated "elbow" brackets that clamp solidly to your table top. Fitted machine screws that lock into embedded sockets on the underside of the tray. (It's not possible to "over" tighten those screws unless you are simply a brute. Once they are "locked" in, they are NOT going to loosen and fall out, even in an earthquake.) It has a slightly "pebbled" surface to keep your keyboard from skating around. Note: It is 32" wide from one clamp's edge to the opposite clamp on the table top. It's WIDE! ASSEMBLY It's fairly simple to put together, but they really should hire a good tech writer to redesign the assembly sheet. The exploded diagrams may confuse the spatially challenged. :) Hint: look at the final few images first to visualize the end result. They also provide a link to a YouTube video on the printed instruction sheet, or search "Defy Desk Keyboard Installation" to find the company's official video. Take your time, and you'll only need to do it once. (You DO have your own ratchet screwdriver with Allen bits, yes? I always toss those right-angle Allen "wrenches" that come with these types of "furniture" products.) The key to good assembly: Don't over tighten screws. DO clamp tightly to the actual table. NOTE: If one clamp is too loose, it can cause the whole unit to be skewed at an angle (on the horizontal plane) which will in turn cause one side or the other of the tracks to jam up. If you're having that issue, check both clamps on the table and be sure they are tightened evenly. (It also helps to have a level desk.) It took me about 40 minutes to get it all carefully assembled and mounted. >> CONS (only one, but it requires a modification!) I placed my keyboard and mouse on the tray… and immediately got that sinking feeling you get when you know it's not going to work. Why? Because there was only about ¼" clearance from the top of my input devices and the underside of the table. (Total 2¾" clearance.) I don't have a high-profile keyboard, but my trackball is tall. My knuckles were hitting the table, and I could not fit my hands over the keys with the tray pushed in, definitely not able to work the trackball with the tray even partially pushed in—barely cleared! Not only that, but now my elbows were at a 45° angle reaching UP to the keyboard, instead of the 90° angle needed for PROPER ERGONOMICS—which is the whole POINT of having a keyboard tray! THE TRAY NEEDS TO BE LOWER. This could be very easily remedied if "Part G"—the elbow portion of the clamp, were just 1½" longer. I really wanted this unit to work out, especially because it was built so very, VERY well. So I reached out to the company, praising the quality of their product, explaining the issue stated above, and requesting to order longer parts or "extensions" to lower the tray. Four days and no response, reached out again and got a reply: "Thank you for your email. I have passed this along to our manufacturing team but unfortunately, this requires new tooling which will take many months. We completely understand if you need to return it. In the meantime, we will be working on improving our keyboard tray." Well, I still did not want to return this tray. I am persistent! >> THE RESOLUTION I mentioned my dilemma to a handyman-type friend and he said "Bring that part to a good MACHINE SHOP and have them FABRICATE NEW PARTS at the size you need. It shouldn't cost very much." That's exactly what I did. (See PHOTOS.) Cost me $45 for the new pair of bracket "elbows" (replacing "Part G") that are 1½" longer than the original parts, and now the tray sits at exactly the height I need for perfect ergonomics—with no more knuckle-banging! I wish I could contact all the other reviewers who had this same issue and tell them about this easy solution. Hopefully this review will help inform future potential buyers. And maybe this review will even ALERT THE MANUFACTURER to this simple solution. >>The other two "NUISANCE" issues were REMEDIED by: 1) Attaching a firm strip of board at the backstop on the mouse side, to prevent the mouse from flying off the back of the tray 2) Attaching a very large binder clip to one side of the tracks (see PHOTO) after I pull the tray out-to keep it from rolling back in while typing. FINAL THOUGHTS: I think this is still the very best keyboard tray available on the market today. The fit & finish is superb. It's hefty & sturdy, and I expect it to last a very, very long time. Total cost with the trips to the machine shop for extra parts was higher than planned, but I'm OK with that. I've been using this "Defy Desk" keyboard tray every day for 4 months now, and I would still recommend this product—if you don't mind getting parts fabricated to make the ergonomics work. (What I'm NOT ok with is that you can't get the one-year WARRANTY unless you write a review on Amazon. That should NOT be a requirement to obtain a warranty. And I've probably even voided the warranty anyway, by changing out parts.)
