I think this is just a side effect of the entire design. It's made of a wire frame and plastic paper sheets, so I am realizing this is all I can expect of it. Having the doors on the front means one wall of the structure has much less support, since the doors aren't locked in and firm like actual walls would be. I know I won't be able to put anything moderately heavy in this. I had to rethink what I could afford to put into the cubby--since it's in my son's room and we have a lot of storage needs (and heavy toys). I have given my children instructions not to lean on it, push on it, put heavy things into it, etc. I think I will eventually save money and replace this with an solid furniture item someday.
