The last time I bought one was 3-4 years ago. After years of frequent use and several cleanings, the hat was finally starting the show its age and shrunk a little (or maybe my head got bigger) so I opted for a new one the next size up.The new hat uses a notably tighter weave of a thinner wool than previously and it was noticeable as soon as I opened the package. The hat itself felt noticeably lighter despite being larger. Pinching the material confirms it is thinner than the older hat.Postal scale noted that the original hat was 3.0oz, while the new hat (again despite being larger in size) was only 2.5 oz which I imagine comes directly from the lighter/thinner wool fabric the hat is made from.The bill reinforcement still appears to be plastic with a brass button, and they still don't seem to be using fillers to make the shape. All good things. But as for the wool fabric, the best I can describe the difference is that the old hat is similar in material to a good wool suit coat, thick and heavy. The new hat is like a cheaper pair of suit pants, still wool but thin and light. That may be a plus to some people.My old hat, despite being folded, sat on, stuffed in suitcases, etc, has never creased or made a seam and a simple shake is all that is needed to fluff it up. I suspect that the new hat, with the thinner material would be more prone, but I can't confirm.At this point I am undecided as to whether I will keep the new hat or look for another brand.
