The upper socket is utilized with the cover lifted for temporary use of power tools.Since I use heavy electric extensions, the plugs and lines take up a lot of room, and I needed the 4-3/4-inch cover to readily accommodate them. If you will be using a single 18-gauge extension, the 2-2/3-inch model should suffice. But if you plan to use heavy extension lines, I would definitely recommend the 4-3/4-inch model.I would also recommend waterproof caulking around or between section joints. **Q: Does this have pin hinges or snap in's? I need this for secuirty, read it locks but can someone pop it open at the hinges?** A: This has two sets of plastic pins set into plastic holes, switchable so you can mount it in two orientations. A clever person could open it w/o breaking anything, but most intruders would leave evidence. Can it be easily broken? Yep.
