He is around 18 lbs and won't allow himself to be held. He has big paws, sharp claws and he sheds more than any cat we have had. And his fur knots up pretty quickly. Once that has started he won't let you use a regular brush -- tugging at those dreadlocks hurts him. I have had success in the past clipping one lock at a time but I was beginning to think we would have to take him to the vet and have him anesthetized for a clip.The first time I used this dematting tool he started to tense up as I tugged it through but there was a bit of a quizzical look -- it didn't hurt as much as he expected. And it cut out a fairly large matted lump of fur. He is not fond of this tool but I am going after the dreads a few at a time. At this point he is almost clear.I misplaced the original tool and bought two different models with more but smaller tines that are perpendicular to the handle. I'm not sure what the problem was -- possibly the other tools were not as sharp. Whatever. I purchased another of the K9Connection dematting tool and am back in business.This does not substitute for a brush. It doesn't pull out the loose fur but rather cuts fur and thins a bit as it goes through. It isn't leaving bald patches or noticeably thin areas. Tinker looks a lot sleeker. He's much happier about being brushed when most of the knots have been cut out.
