## Overview

Phyllostachys Bissetti is a robust, cold-hardy bamboo thriving in USDA zone 5 and warmer, capable of surviving temperatures as low as -15°C. It grows rapidly to 20 feet tall, sometimes reaching 45 feet in warmer areas, with dense evergreen foliage ideal for privacy screens, windbreaks, or stylish garden accents. This large 1-gallon plant adapts to full sun or shade and requires moderate watering after establishment, making it a low-maintenance, versatile choice for year-round outdoor greenery.

## Description

For a Phyllostachys, this is a smaller specimen and usually only grows to around 20 feet in height though it has been reported to have grown to 45 feet in some warmer locations and is 1 inch in diameter. It’s a good choice as a containerized plant as it is so very cold hardy that being above ground will not be of concern in most places that you will not need to bring it inside. It has attractive green canes with large evergreen foliage. It has the ability to provide a very dense canopy (if this is your desire, otherwise you can thin the canopy) and provides excellent shading. Effective uses are privacy screening, hedging, groves, wind breaks and a display specimen. Hardy from zone 5 and higher and down here in Florida, it readily accepts full sun and high humidity. As stated earlier, the plant is hardy down to -15 degrees. It will die back at -25 degrees and return the next spring with growing very quickly to reestablish in record time. This is truly a bamboo for almost all locations and climates! No shipments to ARIZONA or HAWAII. Your plants are guaranteed to arrive safely and alive. If you have any issue, please advise within 24 hours of receipt along with a picture of the plant in question and we will work through any problem.

Review: Arrived extremely well packaged and in wonderful condition - It's only been in the ground a few days, but it arrived extremely well packaged and in wonderful condition. It's going strong in spite of being buffeted by winds all day for three days... That's one thing I didn't think of when choosing its location. Fingers crossed.
Review: Follow their care instructions - The plant was well packed, in very good shape and the root ball very moist when it arrived. I unpacked it and was pleased to find care instructions had been included. I followed the sellers directions, planted the bamboo and made sure to keep it well watered. The plant has been in the ground for several weeks now and there are lots of new leaves emerging so I guess it's happy. I have a heavy deer population that seems to eat anything it can find so I'd recommend surrounding the plant with a protective fence initially.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: I just received plant..Can I divide into two..if yes, how?**
A: I pulled them apart at the roots and made 3 pots. I will plant in spring

**Q: Is this a clumping bamboo?**
A: Bisset's bamboo is considered by horticulturists as a leptomorph bamboo: the underground rhizomes tend to grow horizontally with long nodes. This is the reason that leptomorph bamboos spread quickly, not maintaining a tight clumping habit, but a spreading thicket of stems. Leptomorph rhizomes in the Phyllostachys genus also grow close to the soil surface. Bisset's bamboo, on average, can spread 2 to 4 feet outward annually. This means a plant clump of stems or culms 3 feet wide in year one can become 7 to 11 feet wide by the end of the second year.

**Q: Acceptable times of year to plant these? Spring? Fall?**
A: As my plants are container grown, it is acceptable to plant Spring through Fall. However, if you do not have an irrigation system, please plant early enough in the fall that they will have time (4 to 6 weeks) to settle before freezing temperatures.

**Q: How long to reach 20' in shade, zone 6a? Want to fill in below tall pine trees which lost lower limbs under 20'.**
A: The growth rate varies depending on where the bamboo is planted (sub, shade, planter/pot, in-ground). Mine is out in full sun and grows approximately 2-3 inches per day with watering every couple days. It is in a planter and I don't expect it to get much higher than 5 or 6 feet.
