The line goes well beyond the advertised 16 feet and is visible in most indoor lighting conditions. The mount though is very difficult to use as a wall mount. The instructions say to mount it on a screw on the wall. If you put the screw at the height you want for your shelves, the line projected by the laser will be about 1/2 inch below that. Also, the laser is not balanced on the screw hole, so if you use a screw, the laser will tilt downwards. This makes getting the line exactly where you want it very difficult. There are small holes in the top and bottom of the mount that are not mentioned in the instructions.
