Also, it's probably not an important thing to fit in the book but Voyager has been in the Delta Quadrant for seven years, and when Chakotay takes command it's apparently reset to factory settings - no refit, no upgrades, in fact, downgraded if anything. I like my Trek Tech, so I was hoping Golden would throw me a bone here!I'm still not sure what to make of the fact that there are only apparently three characters from the show still on the ship... It would be unfeasible for the crew to still be together, but to have spread as far apart as they have still strikes me as a bit odd.There are few plots kicked off in this story (and a couple carried over from Homecoming/Farther Shore), which don't seem to interact with one another. I don't mind this so much as some are more interesting than others, and there are usually two or three different threads dealt with in a chapter.That's what I'm not sure to make of it - it's good to keep all the main cast in the book and doing their various tasks, but it can also detract from the main plot of the book.The Big Reveal at the end of the book left me a little cold, as I'd kinda pieced together what was going to happen before I got to the last page. Still, it was a short pleasant read that kept boredom at bay for an evening or two. I'm quietly hopeful part two will be better. ### ⭐⭐⭐ Okay, not great *by S***7 on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 October 2012* In some ways the start of this book feels more exciting than the last two. Whereas the last were integration back into the Alpha Quadrant - this should be the crew spreading their wings and getting on with some exciting new, missions... boldly going, you could say.However the book soon starts showing flaws.Golden needs to find a home for all the characters, and not all make sense. Harry Kim as a security officer is odd - it'd be like a Scientist getting a promotion to a Police Chief. Many characters are sidelined such as Tom. But she also has new characters. Kaz, who is rather bland and probably suffers from lack of a TV character to form a basis, and a counsellor who is just annoying in a sense that I can't imagine some TV character having flapping ears etc.I *love* the story with Janeway, of Federation worlds wanting to sucede. This continues the war-ravaged quadrant feel of the two books, and is a very real look at how the Federation works. While not given much 'screen time', it's great and it's something I would like to have seen more.My main issue is characters the story relies on - like Chakotay's sister - are not compelling, and the story even less so. Golden revisits one of the worst Voyager episodes - Tattoo. Of all the episodes to revisit, that one? Really? I can see the author wants to flesh out Chakotay, but this is the wrong episode to do it with.Probably a 2.5* book, but I''ll give it 3 as it's an easy read with some good elements. And it does have a nice twist towards the end which led me into the next part. ### ⭐ Awful ! *by R***R on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 January 2011* Dreadful plot, unconvincing characterisation - a pointless continuation made all the more disappointing as I had been looking forward to it, having decided to catch up with all the post TV Trek continuations.Skip this dross and go straight to Kirsten Beyers continuations. She dismisses this junk, remaining plot threads and the new characters in a few paragraphs and she then gets on with a proper continuation.Kirsten Beyers novels are great - probably better than the series itself.
