    Shakin' And Makin'

Book was very informative. Covered the history of the Shakers and provided excellent pictures of antique furniture constructed by them. The measured drawings will be helpful when building some of the furniture in the book. Book arrived in a timely manner and was all I expected.

This was first printed in 1971, the currently marketed version by Dover Press was printed in 1992.  I have the paperback version, the pages have slightly yellowed since 1992, the printing is very characteristic of how books of this type were done in the 1970s.  There’s nothing wrong with that.  About half the book is background on the Shakers, information unchanged since the 1800s, so it’s not dated.  The measured drawings are adequately detailed for a modern woodworker to use, even in the age of Sketch-Up, though the drawings are less distinct and less glitzy.  I bought this after a YouTube recommendation from Tom McLaughlin in a Fine Woodworking video.  It was a good recommendation.  He was making a dresser modeled from a measured drawing in this book.  I bought the book exclusively to get that measured drawing, but I found the narrative portion of the book interesting as well, and other measured drawings in it prospectively useful for future projects.  This book is well worth the price.
