Trees of Illinois: Including Tall Shrubs

While it focuses on Illinois, this wonderful book would be great for anyone east of the Rockies (or in much of North America, for that matter). It might miss a few trees from other regions, but most of the trees featured in this book are quite widespread. As the book's description says, it covers 213 species.For each species, this book offers multiple photos featuring important I.D. characteristics, an Illinois map, an illustration showing the overall form of the tree, and plenty of information. The illustrations are attractive, and the photos are superb. It even includes a handy dichotomous key. In addition to identification, this book provides the reader with a firm foundation of general plant biology, as well as the science of trees, forests, and organization/classification.I own several hundred natural science books, and Trees of Illinois easily makes it into the top ten. Admittedly, it helps that the book is aimed at the state in which I live -- but as I said, this is a fine book for almost any North American naturalist.

Very nice book, keeping it on coffee table to share. I enjoy flipping to random pages or focusing on certain trees. Very nice photos & wonderful illustrations. Just the right amount of information for my casual geekiness. Will later use it on hikes & backpacking.

This book is a must for anyone who loves Trees in the state in Illinois or looking for a really wonderful Tree Identification Book. The pictures are wonderful, great cover on it for backpacking, and it's very informative. I would recommend this book to anyone!

I love this book. I am a native Illinois guy, and I have to say that the photos and descriptions are fantastic. This book was incredibly researched and the countless actual photos and diagrams of every tree and stage of growth are amazing. 10 stars .

This book will be with me on every foray outside. Clear and plentiful well-sized colored photos for each tree covered. I bought this book as a guide to easily identify trees around which morel mushrooms appear. It impressed me so much I will be keeping it with my hiking gear. Highly recommend.

Just got it today. From what I have read it is very good and has lots of very valuable information. Highly recommended for anyone buying a new house in a new subdivision and is looking to plant trees. I wish I had this book 11 years ago

I am a hunter that wanted to know more about the trees and shrubs of Illinois. This book was easy to use and provided most of the information that I was looking for.Only real down point for me is that some of the pictures were to generic to really see the difference in some of the trees.Bonus is that this book is fairly water proof so taking it out to the trees is helpful.

Well organized, useful guide. Among the best on Illinois and applicable to the region.
