Description of this DVD says "remastered". Its a DVD-R of a videotape copy.
Disappointed in the description of this disc. 1. There is no studio listing. Who released this? 2. In the description, it says "Remastered Edition". Its a DVD-R of a videotape recording. There are tracking lines along the whole bottom of the screen. One would think that if you're going to mass produce a video like this, get a videotape machine that tracks better. I'm not sure which is better; this copy or the ones found on Youtube.

The movie gets lots of undeserved criticism about not being as good as the earlier version and showing the evils of an authoritarian government.edmund O'brien works in the ministery of truth to rewrite history and hide history. He finds a girl in another department and they have a secret affair because only the state can choose your mate.I think the movie is great showing how the government controls everybody and what they hear and can do,its just done in the context of a love story. The government finds out about the affair and the couple is brainwashed ending their love.this is an important film which should be a must see for everybody especially in these time we are living in

Pick a different version of the movie
Terrible version of the movie the pictures all should the color version but this is the black and white version and not the good version either its way out of order and just a terrible version I'd recommend getting one of the other versions this one skips many important parts of the book adds stuff that didn't happen in the book and is so jumbled its not even worth watching I've read the book many times and was trying to show the girlfriend it and we shut it off less than half way throughDon't get this version find a different one

Prediction of the Future made back years Ago
This version of "1984" made by this movie distribution company is the best in terms of visual clarity. The other distribution company made a copy that was too dark to see in portions of the movie. What the amovie predicts is unfortunately hasppening to day in this society where "big brother" is alreay here and our freedoms are eroding very quickly. As it once was said, "all that evil needs to be successful is for the good man to do nothing." The society in this movie is taken completely over by a totalitarian government of the Left ( no personal freedoms, no free speech, no private property).A very stark and dark movie, but one should see it to know what can happen with our society.

"Remastered Edition" it is certainly NOT
First of all, let me say that the 1956 version of 1984 is by far the best version and closest to the novel. So, as far as the movie itself, its absolutely great. Very appropriate for today's world with Big Brother's new name being the NSA. Everyone should watch this movie to see exactly what we have at risk when we allow unlimited government spying. As to the actual product, the description is absolutely misleading - this is not a remastered version. It appears to be a very poor transfer of a PAL version taken from a very old film print. At the bottom of the screen you have loads of digital noise from the "conversion" of a PAL movie to NTSC (the US standard). The movie has no detail. Faces at a distance are simply round blobs. The sound track really needs noise reduction with lots of crackles and hiss. You would probably get a better copy recording this off of Turner Classic Movies. Is it worth the $14.95 Amazon asks for it? If you really want to see this 1956 version of the movie then you basically have no options but to pony up the money for this inferior product. The quality is so bad it should sell for no more than $4.95 but, hey, Amazon wants to make lots of money so you get the idea. If I were Amazon, I would be ashamed to offer this copy and personally apologize for selling a crappy print like this and refund everyone's money. Selling this movie under false pretenses ("Remastered") at a high price just sours me to ever believing Amazon again.Oh yes, this is basically a DVD copy made on a computer, not a mass manufactured DVD, so it doesn't work on all devices. It wouldn't work on my laptop or DVD player, which both thought the DVD was blank. I had to bring the DVD to my office, copy it to my Avid mastering system, then clean it up. I should bill Amazon for my time and effort making this trash viewable. So, as a recap, this is a great movie, a 5-star movie, that I wish was properly remastered on a real DVD. Unfortunately, Amazon took the cheap way out and got a crappy, old PAL copy that they burn onto a DVD for every order. I would expect the same thing from one of the fly-by-night stores on the Internet but not from Amazon. So, if this is your only option for this movie, then Amazon has you where they want you.Amazon, we expected more from you. You have let us all down.

Great
This is the black and white version of 1984 which I never saw before. My situation is that I never read the book so I don't have alot of info about the movie and how close it matches the book, but it still remains one of the best for it's time. It now has a place in my collection with the 1984 remake of the book with Richard Burton. By the way, the remake was released in 1984 also. Someone timed that out pretty good. Just a bit of movie trivia for you all.

So not what I expected...
OK, I will admit, I am biased as I have seen and loved the John Hurt version from the 80's. But I wanted to try something different and juxtapose the 2 cinematic versions in my mind because I am nerd in that aspect.Boy, was I ever disappointed.I did not care for the dry, slow moving pacing of the "action" and drama. I found my self disengaged. Although I enjoyed the hokey set pieces and fairly close adaptation of the storyline, I was not into the execution of it all. And it's not that I dislike B&W cinema. I just found this one...boring.AS for the quality of this product, I was unnerved to no end. As stated in previous reviews, the sound quality is beyond poor. There is an incessant hiss that dulls the audio and made the dialogue at times inaudible. As for the picture quality, it is fuzzy and has a distortion at the bottom of the screen that indicates this was transferred from a VHS copy. Annoying and distracting. I thought I could get past it, but I couldnt, especially when this version is being touted as "remastered".Avoid unless you are serious about this movie.

Doubleplusgood
I'm an Orwell buff, not an opera buff (though I do enjoy the art form - in the past couple of years I've seen maybe a dozen English National Opera productions in London). I bought this DVD, for what seemed like a steep price, because I'm researching a book about George Orwell on screen and I'm a completist. As a dramatic staging of the great man's dystopian masterpiece, it's terrific. Sets, singing, orchestra, atmosphere - all wonderful. Sure, it takes a few liberties, and is unintentionally comic on one or two occasions, but it kept me engrossed for two-and-a-half hours.OK, the critics hated it. And yes, I know next to nothing about opera and classical music. I'm a humble prole in that regard. But when I ordered this DVD, my ignorance was my strength.

I enjoyed it
I enjoyed it. I do not give a fart for what critics say they are bye and large the useless end of the spectrum. Yes it has its faults. Yes it has its low musical moments. However read critics of the ring . Read reviews of Tosca and you'll see that only time will tell. Those who listen to critics are only the brain dead.

A disturbing and still devastatingly relevant story - brilliantly and chillingly performed!
For anyone who likes their "entertainment" to be challenging as well as superbly made and performed, this is ideal. It's intensity will take hold of you from the start and never let you go and your emotions will be engaged and your thoughts undoubtedly (and disturbingly) provoked.
