231W 1.25-Inch Roughing Out Gouge

This is my first big roughing gouge and I love it. I'm just getting into woodturning but I was a machinist for well over 20 yrs. before I had to retire due to a blown disc in my lower back. Now I'm getting a small workshop set up and tooling up a new Jet 1014 Pro wood lathe. So when it comes to tools I can tell the good ones from the crap. This is definitely one of the good ones. It took a bit to get a good edge on it with my new Tormek. Which tells me that its made of good hard tool steel that will hold an edge for a while. Standard rule of thumb when sharpening tools. The harder the steel is, the longer it takes to get a edge on it, and that means the longer it will last before it needs it again. The handle has a good feel to it and is big enough around to be comfortable in my big hand and makes it well balanced too.Overall I think I made a good buy and I'm very pleased with it. This is going to be one that I will get a lot of use out of and will be in my shop for a very long time. If your looking for a new roughing gouge I highly recommend that you spend a little extra and get this one over the cheaper ones.

I was hesitant at first thinking it wasn't high quality but this thing came out the box ready to put in some work. As a female woodturning, this was an excellent buy. I thought the handle was too long but to my surprise, it's perfect and stable for control. Cut through hard maple like butter. I would consider buying a 1in if they had it or other woodturning tools.

I love this gouge. I had to turn down a huge blank of alder for a cane and this gouge breezed through it. It was stable, heavy enough to handle a huge job, and comfortable to use. I'm a 5'6" tall woman, and not really very strong, but this gouge was a piece of cake for me to handle. It came sharp and stayed sharp. I wish I had gotten this one a long time ago - I never realized the difference between the gouges I had been using and a really good one until I turned this last cane!

This gouge is made of quality material but needs sharpened before use. It is well balanced and an incredible buy for the money

This is the best gouge i have ever had. Ok fine it is a simple tool but it is well made and does the job at a great price.very good for the pro and for someone just starting out in lathe work. You can spend more if you want to but this tool is great. The handle stock is smooth and long enough to rest on my hip for nice controlled cuts. and this tool was ready to go right out of the box. a real must have to fill out your gouge collection.

Came sharp, huge tool, long handle, feels like good quality tool, works very well, worth every penny

GREAT roughing gouge! When I bought my lathe and the original set of gouges, I was not aware that there was no roughing gouge in the set. At first I was using a large spindle gouge to begin my pieces. I was a beginner wood-turner and through watching some videos I found that I NEEDED a roughing gouge. This one is fantastic and don't know how I made it without it at first! Makes beginning a new piece a breeze!
