I should think so. You just need a way of reading the values coming from the sensor to detect motion.

range please - how far away can it be from the surface that you are measuring?

Depends on the sensitivity setting. I have had no problems in the 2 to 3 meter range which is perfect for my uses. Also, this is an infrared sensor that senses motion, so if your surface is stationery, you might consider an ultrasonic sensor instead.

It's pretty good, full range in 2 more feet
