Q: Is this suitable for an ipad ?

It will certainly hold an iPad as I have it to hold A4 manuscripts of 300 pages and more. But I suppose it depends at what angle you intend to use your ipad at. Though it does adjust some. It is quite sturdy.

Q: Just how strong is the spring because turning the pages of a book repeatedly must surely become an arm strenghening exercise?

I use mine for holding my E/reader, for holding books its not so good as the clip also gets in the way of reading it as well. As you have guessed about turning the pages is not clever.

Upright it is about 22 cm high, 20 cm deep and 25 cm wide. The holding but is adjustable to a pretty thick paperback. I use it for paperbacks mostly rather than big cookbooks and it works fine for me.

I use it to hold my knitting patterns up, I do put a bit of stiff card behind it so the pattern doesn’t flop over, I also use it for my iPad when I’m sewing, and I also put my quilting books on it too ~ would buy again very happy with the stand
