A good short story about life in the aftermath of the wars with the Covenant!
Rion Forge chose not to follow in the footsteps of her father and grandfather. They were warriors in the UNSC forces that fought against the Covenant. Her grandfather has died but her father is missing. His UNSC ship, the Spirit of Fire, has been declared missing in action over 26 years ago.Rion has spent her life as a space scavenger looking for scrap, weapons, technology, treasures and Forerunner technology. She has a good ship, the Ace of Spades, with the best technology she could afford and she made a reasonable life and fortune with it. She has a small but loyal crew that was skilled and followed her orders to the letter. She is a good leader and they like her.Rion wants to find worthwhile booty to help make her and her crew wealthy and happy, but most of all she wants to find her father. She wants to know what happened to her personal hero that she adored as a child. After all of the years of wandering and looking she finally begins to find some leads of information. Her crew is behind her to help find her father. The journey that they embark on is dangerous and and challenging. They need all of their skills and luck to succeed. Treasures and surprises awaited them, as long as they had the courage to pursue their dreams…..This is a very good book. I have read all of the Halo books that have been written and many are excellent and some are bad. This author can write a good story and most importantly she has followed the Halo storyline and concepts that Halo fans have come to know and love. Many of the other newer authors have tried to write their own stories and put their own political spin into the Halo concept. In my opinion they failed miserably and wrote books that were not interesting and were so dogmatic in trying to put their own spin on the Halo saga. The original Halo books were some of the best science fiction I have ever read and I have read thousands of books in my life. The saga did not need to be rewritten but just continued in the same storyline style and intensity in which it began.Kelly Gay has written a short story that I liked a lot. The book is only 150 pages long but it made me hope that she continues to write a second, a third and a fourth book in the Halo saga. Her heroine has a challenge ahead of her that can lead to a series of interesting books that Halo fans would love to read. Kelly only has to remember to embrace the Halo saga and not try to change history or to destroy the wonderful stories and characters already written in the first Halo books.I look forward to Kelly’s future Halo books. I rated this one at 5 stars. It is a very good start!I am still looking for another Halo book from this author as I liked this one and I found it entertaining.

Awesome story!!!
This is my first book that I've read set in the Halo universe and I LOVED it! Great story, great characters and imagery, and it was nostalgic reading about certain technologies in the book. I had a great time and I'm looking forward to the next book in this series! I've always loved Halo and I love this book! Thank you.

Very short, but satisfying.
Smoke and Shadow kept me invested in the characters and plot well enough to keep me reading, but it is also so sorry that I was able to finish it in about three days. Its non unlimited status meant I had to pay three dollars for a read that was shorter than other three dollar titles. Still, the book felt like it was built to be short out the gate so it earns a degree of respect for knowing what it isand being shameless that. I would call it a successful bit of writing if my biggest complaint is that the story doesn't continuebeyond where the writer chose to end it. However, if it were any shorter I might think that I were being strung along unnecessarily. It's a good read if you are a fan of the halo franchise, ever major character an original creation with a few minor character references to Halo Wars and Kilo 5.

Great book!
Always been a fan of the Halo universe but this is just my second book to read in it. It's a very fast read but entertaining throughout. Book is left open so I hope a part is not too far off. If you're a fan of the Halo universe or just love Sci fi then check it out!

Great book. The author builds characters well.
The author builds characters that are easy to relate to and understand. The story meshes well with the rest of the Halo universe and I look forward to reading more Halo books from this author in the future.

best halo book in some time, 343 guilty spark again ....yay
if you actually read this then, you're likely contemplating if this book or a different halo book is worth it, well new blood and bad blood were hyped up to me and they sucked, terrible. this book got a half meh mention. I picked it up and re read it and bought the sequel it was soo awesome. great story writing for sure.my only gripe is when i bought the audio book the narrator pronounced the main character rion as REE- OWN and in the follow up novel a different narrator pronounced the character as Ry-ohn, the latter makes more sense in the lore, but i really liked the first narrators pronunceation better....just a minor quip

Great for such a short read
After reading the first part in Fractures, I knew I needed to get the rest of the story. This book does a phenomenal job following a salvager, Rion, and her crew on maybe her most important mission yet. Plus the connections it made back to the rest of the universe were a very cool. Don’t skip this one, but it only gets 4 stars since it’s only 174 pages. I can’t wait to read what happens next to the Ace of Spades and her crew.

Post-Covenant War search
Author Kelly Gay brings is an interesting adventure in the years following the end of the Covenant War. Humans and aliens began to search for the wreaks of everything that had been lost during that war. One person by the name of Rion Forge has been looking for clues to find her missing father who was aboard a UNSC ship the Spirit of Fire. Captain Forge gets coordinates for salvage on a moon where a downed UNSC ship had been spotted and she takes the risk and goes for it. From there they find a small clue leading them to a downed Consonant ship and to finally a forerunner instillation. This is a great book and one that I highly recommend picking up if you're a science fiction fan.
