Does it fit over the ears?

It might fit over the very top of your ears but it differs from person to person. And it depends on how you wear it and the size of your head. I have some that I wear that covers my head completely like the white one in the picture and I have some that I can tuck the top of my ears in. I mostly just wear them on my head and leave my ears out. Stay cool, man!

As a woman, can I wear this more toward the back of my head, to cover the crown, over thin long hair, or will it fall off? Would it stay worn this way

It was very skimpy. It was smaller than I thought it would be. I think it would fall off if you tried to wear it toward the back of your head.

The tag seems like a really bad idea -- won't I feel it when I'm wearing it? And does it show?

It’s no big deal but I personally didn’t like the hat and regifted it .
