An AWAIR Pick!!!
Averroes - you perhaps know him as the great influence upon Thomas Aquinas - reconciliation of science and religion - rational thought and theology - right? Did you know he was a Muslim? Did you know his real name was Ibn Rushd and that the ideas he put forward about the synthesis of science and religion were from the Qur'an? No split between science and religion in Islam. No split between religion and rational thinking. Whatever the mind can do to think, create, investigate (particularly in the natural sciences) is not the enemy of Islam, but rather is required of Muslims! One supposes that when the creators of European history changed his name to a "Latin Christian" name Ibn Rushd's skin tones got lightened up a few shades and he just gets annexed to white man's history. We haven't known who and what were the influences on Thomas Aquinas that will eventually lead to the Enlightenment and the "European" Renaissance! In this set of six volumes (get all six, only one is highlighted here) the cultural and technological achievements made in the medieval Islamic world are the foundations of present knowledge and include instruments for measuring distance and latitude, keeping time, doing invasive surgery, solving complicated mathematical problems, examining the night sky, and reconciling science and religion (the last is still being struggled with in the West). This is one of 6 books highlighting outstanding Muslim contributors to philosophy, mathematics and/or science. Filled with full-color illustrations, featuring Islamic artwork. Each is a fine biography, well written and certain to be an important resource in any school library. Glossary, Index, Web sites, Bibliography, Resources, Timeline.Teachers/Librarians: a must for the library and classroom serving 5th - 9th grades, social studies / science / math / humanities - library binding.
