The blade is absolutely beautiful and a viably scary weapon
This is definitely a collector's item - probably not an ideal choice for one's only jian. It's stiff and it's heavy and the balance point is about 1/3 of the way from the handle to the point, which will disorient many users. The blade is absolutely beautiful and a viably scary weapon, if a live jian is what you're looking for.I love the austerity of the design. That was the first thing I noticed, and remains its main distinction and selling point. If you're reading this, you've noticed it, too.The design and the challenge of wielding a jian with no hand guard made it irresistible to me. I am not totally comfortable with it; it forces me to work harder, which is what I expect and want. I don't want to become too accustomed to any one jian, and this one is significantly different enough from my others to make it just right. In a perfect world, it would fit into the scabbard "both ways", but the world is not perfect. One way, the wooden handle and the wooden scabbard are flush; the other way they are not. For five times the price, I'd count that as a flaw, but for an affordable jian like this, it's hardly worth mentioning. This is not a jian for everyone. If you buy it for the right reasons, you will love it. On the other hand, if you buy it for the wrong reasons and don't love it, it will have a high resale value, possibly more than you payed if you find the right buyer. I am totally satisfied with this purchase - I would have payed more and still been just as happy.

This is a solid and nice looking budget sword
This is a solid and nice looking budget sword, very stabby. Great looking wood, and nice finish on the blade, looks very nice all around and feels good in hand. Arrived at the quicker end of the shipping estimate, but packaging is terrible, and the tip was slightly rolled. One of the fullers is very good and the other is only slightly off. I will have to file the broken tip and resharpen the point, and touch up the edges only a tiny bit. I wear size L gloves and the handle fits me very well. Feels a bit stiff and heavy and forward weighted and very stabby in the point. There aren't a lot good choice for sharp jian at this price so if you like the style, it is a real forged medium carbon steel sword. Edit: It pierces and cuts very well, and has held up to some light backyard cutting with no problem. This has tremendous stabbing power due to its stiffness and that lovely tapered point. Also the scabbard has very good fit and retention but fits only one way.

Exceeded expectations
This sword shipped faster than Amazon's projected date. Kudos to Longquan. It came in a package encased in styro-foam, and it said "training sword" on the invoice / receipt. I was confused because I didn't order a training sword LOL and the projected date for the shipment was November 7 through the 23rd. But with dauntless vigor, I opened up the package, making a mess in the process with the styro-foam. I opened the package and found the pictured product I'm giving a review on inside a long bag that came with the sword. The blade was oiled and was indeed damascus steel, and it tapers to a point just like the picture. My sword came with a little bit of error, as the groove or fuller wasn't perfectly in the middle of the sword, but that is incredibly irrelevant to practice so it's not a big deal at all. The sword was sharp and it was shiny and you can see the ripples of the different layers of steel that had been hammered out. There's only two problems I can find with this sword and it's the lack of hand-guard (which you kind of paid for because it's a sword that fits into the shape of a stick/pole. That would be an issue if you were to fight someone with a sword but not a big deal if youre used to not having a hand-guard on a sword. The only other issue with the hand guard is that if you're a beginner and/or you have a weak grip on the sword because your'e not used to it, your hand can slide up onto the blade. Thankfully there's another piece of metal right above the "hilt" that is beautifully engraved, of which the name escapes my knowledge, that kept my hand from being cut at all. It hasn't happened again because I've gotten used to swinging it around now. The other problem is that if you have short fingers OR small hands, the handle may cause your thumb to become tired from gripping it. If you have long fingers, it's not a big deal, but me, having a large palm compared to my fingers, tires me a bit :D However, the wood is very nice and does not slide around your hand very easily. And although the balance isn't ideal to a lot of people, for me, it was not an issue (probably because of the way it was tapered to the tip), as you may be able to see in the video below. Here's my first review of a sword ever on Youtube, and it's pretty bad quality but if you want to see how it can move. I'm 5'2 and the length of the sword is pretty nice compared to my build./watch?v=kCrwwSFiocYI haven't cut with it yet, but as I have seen on youtube, and feeling the sharpness, I'm sure it's amazing at that (although preferably not against trees because that's just not good to do to a sword haha :\) I don't know if all of Longquan's swords are this nice, but it would be nice to know that this seller makes amazing swords. Maybe I'll buy another in the future.I'm giving it 5 stars because it exceeded my expectations. It's not a PERFECT sword (but what is?), but for the price, and for a nice, concealable in plain sight weapon (that looks like a stick you might take hiking), it's amazing.

green uncured wood completely warping and coming apart at the seams.
I've had this sword for about a week now, and the wood is completely warping and distorting... total bummer... I live in a dry climate, but this speaks to how green and uncured the original wood was. not very happy with what was on original opening, a very nice looking sword.update - have had several emails with the seller, and they have given a partial refund on this... I should be able to steam the scabbard, pull it apart and glue it up again to get some of the warp out of it... updated to three stars just because the seller went out of their way to try and resolve this issue... sending it back to china for the cost of the sword just wasn't going to happen... I'll use this for practice, and live with it.
