Preseasoned Pig Molcajete KM-03

Though this molcajete says it's preseasoned, I still ran 5 batches of rice and two batches of dried beans through it before I used it. It gave off some grit during this process, so I'm very glad I didn't put expensive ingredients in it right out of the box. The other reviewers didn't mention if they noticed grit (and some even said there was no grit in their food after using this right out of the box) but I would suggest that anyone buying this season it themselves.Having said that, I do believe Sur La Table did sand a good portion of grit off the inside of the bowl during the manufacturing process, and I'm grateful for that because it meant I didn't have to do the "full" seasoning ritual (and it saved some time and elbow grease!). Also, I've read some horror stories about folks buying a lava rock/stone molcajete that was authentic but just contained a lot of finer grit that never seemed to stop issuing from the bowl even after many rounds of seasoning. I'm grateful I didn't have that experience here and my family loves the guacamole that I've made with it so far.There's a lot of advice out there to avoid cheap imitations and other molcajetes that are not made out of lava rock, so for anyone out there wondering if this is authentic--it most certainly is.

This was a gift for a friend who is from Oxaca Mexico. She grew up very poor & always wanted one of these to cook with. She & her husband had our family over for dinner recently & she was so proud to serve us her guacamole. It was amazing! And she just beemed over her mocajete...so happy to have it & loved that it was in the shape of a pig! We're so blessed to have this wonderful family as our friends & such a great feeling to be able to find this at Sur La Table to gift her with it! Highly recommend & even though some people had an issue with flaking, she didn't but seasoned it anyway just in case!

Wow, nothing is true in the description. It is not 10 pounds it is 3. It does NOT hold for 4 cups!! It is only 4-5 inches across and the deepest part is one inch! I will be returning this.

Had some little holes in bowl that are near impossible to clean even with a brush so after one use there is avocado stuck down in them. Not very safe to use if I can't get old food out.

I was disappointed that I had order and payed extra for a new molcajete and I got a used one.

Never rinse in garbage disposal. The hand held part had some larger chunks fall off and were rinsed into the garbage disposal..not a good thing but better than a tooth! All in all it only needed a one pass seasoning

This thing is great! I followed some seasoning instructions even though this was listed as pre-seasoned. There were no really rough spots to begin with, but I did note that the 3rd batch of rice was lighter in color than the first. So, was the extra effort necessary? Probably not, but I'm not sorry to have invested the time into what I hope is a lifetime acquisition. I really like the texture achieved better than either mashing in a bowl or with a food processor. This mocajete is the real deal-get one before the wall goes up and tariffs are imposed!

Quality, well made, yes it is volcanic stone (not cement). Mine was pre-seasoned (no grit).Easily holds 4 cups. So cute that mostly I use it for display with my other mortar and pestles.For those that live where they won't ship to like myself, you can use the service of a forwarder. Google something like: shop us online international shipping. I won't recommend any thus far I have only used one.
