I use a wood paint stirrer. It is the exact right size. It works great.

Has anyone ever used this to cut homemade soap?

That's what I bought it for and it works great. I did have to hold the loaf of soap a bit at an angle to get it right - but yes - it cuts soap!

I like ridiculously thin slices of cheese. Like slivers! Can this do that?

I believe that you can slice as thin as you can hold your cheese piece.I've cut slices less than an 1/8 inch with ease.
