Poor machining results in knob that won't tighten
The good news is this is a heavy duty slicer. It's almost entirely metal, the only plastic parts are a couple of small plastic washers that could in theory be replaced. The bad news is that the one I received has one knob that doesn't tighten properly. Taking it apart, there are little metal bushings that ride along the inside of the frame (these bushings are what the screws thread into). One of the bushings was machined crooked, so the screw would not tighten square to the frame. If it doesn't tighten square, then it's not getting a full surface to apply friction, and no amount of tightening (even with a pliers) will be enough to get it to stay in place. Considering there are other reviews of this item that list a non-tightening knob problem, I'd say this is likely not an isolated incident. The manufacturer needs to invest in some quality control, or some new tooling equipment. As far as the wire, it looked a little sloppy (not tight) but seems to work fine. It's offset entirely toward one surface of the slicer which you'd think would make it hard to use, but it doesn't.I'm docking it three stars for the improperly machined part, because it's either right or it isn't, and this one isn't right.

Sturdy, does a good job
I got this slicer because we eat a lot of the sharp cheddar cheese that can break apart when you cut it with a knife. I knew a wire slicer would solve that issue. The adjustable feature is a real plus. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because the little knob that you use to adjust the position of the roller (and hence the thickness of your slices) tends to loosen as you're using it. But I'm not finding that a big deal - I just stop and tighten the knob as I go. Super easy to clean; nice metal finish. Definitely recommend.

best of the bunch
We live in Oregon and buy only the bricks of cheese made inTillamook, everything from extra sharp cheddar to the softerJack varieties and this slicer does very well.I have tried several brands and types of cheese slicers overthe years and have found this particular one to be the verybest. It is adjustable, the wire has proven to be quite strong, the slicer glides easily, and does well in the dishwasher. Our whole family loves grilled cheese sandwiches so thisslicer gets a lot of use. Pre-sliced cheeses cost more and areusually too thin for a hearty grilled cheese. I am now buyingadditional ones so there is always one in the drawer readyfor use.I would recommend this to anyone looking for a dependablecheese slicer.

Decent Cheese Slicer
This slicer is heavy duty. It is not flimsy or cheap feeling. I deduct one star because the cutting wire seems to collect a lot of cheese bits and you don't get a clean even slice. I don't know if it's the roller or maybe the wire is too heavy of a gauge. I might try replacing the wire with something thinner. See if that works. But overall it's a good quality slicer and I'm pretty happy with it. I cut the cheese a lot.

with replaceable wires that are easily found and purchased
I have had a battle of the cheese slicers for a couple of years. I want an adjustable cheese slicer, with replaceable wires that are easily found and purchased. This slicer is ok, but I haven't been able to locate the correct replacement wires. I have pretty much given up on these and my family is very unhappy with me. Our favorite cheese is rarely in the house now. I have switched to other kinds that be picked up at a deli.

heavy duty, but awkward
Yes, it's a battleship. You could pound nails with this thing. But the position of the wire relative to the roller is weird. I didn't think I would mind it, but as it turns out I just can't get used to it. Instead of being "out at the tip" of the device, the wire is almost below the roller. Picture this: if you set the thing down flat on the counter, the handle, the roller, and the wire are all actually touching the surface of the counter. It's awkward to use, at least for me.And the knobs that lock the adjustable roller in place are lame. You can't tighten them enough to get them to stay in place. Maybe with pliers? That would make a good Amazon combo... "frequently bought together: this fine cheese slicer and these lovely slip-joint pliers!"I'd have been happier with another cheapo, non-adjustable cheese slicer that had the wire out at the end where it belongs.

Potentially great; actually average
The Swissmar cheese slicer looks and feels like a quality product. It is pleasing to look at and has a nice weight in the hand. Unfortunately the main selling point, the adjustability is the weak point. The first slicer Amazon sent was broken; the wire was loose and the right hand adjusting would not tighten. I sent it back. The second one seemed fine, the wire was taught and the adjustment knobs worked. Unfortunately after a few uses the left hand knob became very hard to tighten and required a pair of pliers to tighten it enough to stop it slipping. I would suggest this is not an item to buy online. Better that you are able to test the item before purchase.

Good Product, Decent Price
I was surprised to find that this slicer was made so heavy duty. I love the ability to adjust the thickness of your slice as well. While I haven't had it for long, so far it's worked great. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the wire won't break (which has happened with all my other slicers). But for now, I'm quite happy with it.

Spare parts?
The slicer works great. I am using it everyday. However out of experience with this type of cheese slicer I know that the most fragile part is the wire.I have been looking to preemptively buy spares but there are none available for this product.Barring that I would give it 5 stars.

Big disappointment. Has aluminum roller.
This product is falsely advertised as stainless steel and dishwasher safe. The roller, which is that part that makes contact with food, is aluminum. One trip through the dishwasher and it is already beginning to oxidize. This product should be pulled from the market. I will be returning this item.
