Four children discover a strange egg hidden in an old Persian carpet in this classic adaptation of E. Nesbit's acclaimed children s story, part of a trilogy of novels that started with Five Children and It. The 8 part drama was first broadcast on the BBC in 1976.A family buys an old carpet from a junkshop in Edwardian London, which when unrolled reveals a large shiny egg. One of the boys accidently knocks the egg into the fire. A charming talking Phoenix emerges and he has the power to grant their wishes. With the magic carpet now laid out in their playroom, their fantastic adventures are about to begin. The children soon find themselves transported to distant lands and faraway places, including a tropical desert island. Closer to home they take the Phoenix on a tour of London where a surprise awaits; and a family trip to the theatre has unexpected results!Nominated for a Daytime Emmy in 1977 for Outstanding Children's Entertainment Series Review: Rise like a Phoenix - 1970s classic BBC kids drama. Excellently produced and acted. Lives upto those childhood memories you have. Dramatic and funny in equal measure. Worth every penny. Review: brings back memories - not seen this since 1976. quality is good. a nice little story. even if you haven't seen it it's worth watching just to see what us adults watched when we were younger.

Phoenix and carpet. Ride carpet and see great Phoenix once again. Such a joy.
Quaint enchanting little tale best seen with a childs eyes. Taken me 43 years to see it again. Was 6 when it was first shown. I enjoyed it, but think when first saw it.Had more impact on me then. Pity i can't go back. But least did get see it again.43years later,is way too long to wait. Story mainly is about, 4 children, Phoenix and Carpet .And adventures they have with it. Is Wonderful tale and reflects a childs imagination. Don't want spoil story 2much . But think it was very good. Best bits i liked, was 'them leaving their Cook on the island' ,maybe she was terrible at cooking.ha.They didn't even worry whats for dinner when we get back home! ha. Cat Burglar guy says ur lovely ,marries cook ha.Yuk barf!. Another bit to watch out for is, when flying on carpet (with hole) ,in background u can see high rises 70s block of flats by mistake. Its Supposed be Victorian times ha! Anyway, i love watching old tv, u see old familiar faces that now sadly are no longer with us.Actors. Memories come flooding back.Where have they and the years gone. How i long to see them all again. Is sad. My brother cryd when it finished at time.. I cry now because carpet took long time to come back to us. If ur young at heart like me, you'll enjoy this. Is Must have for kids from 70s.Soon i'll be in my 70's ha. So take ride on carpet one more time .

Sheer escapism to I think a better era.
I watched this as a 14 year old (not like 14 year olds are now). It was released in the BBC Store a couple of years back and my 11 year old (computer game mad) nephew and myself loved it. I had to buy it again. I’m 57 and it hasn’t lost it’s charm nor I my inner child apparently. I’ve just received today Lizzie Dripping. More tv heaven.

Classic children's TV
Been waiting to watch this again for literally 40 plus years. Saw it as a child, was enchanted by the story, and the idea of finding an egg that turned into a mythical talking Pheonix, it granted you wishes, then whisked you away to magical lands on a flying carpet, appealed somewhat. Still does now. Oh the joy!! 😊 👍

Fabulous. A real gem.
Fabulous. Saw this as a child in the 1970s. When I first saw it again, the special effects were not great (very much of their time), however, the Phoenix was just as fantastic as I remembered him and some great acting. Will certainly watch this again and again! A real gem.

Waited 42 years for this.....
How well I remember watching this gem of classic BBC children’s drama as a wide eyed 6-year-old back in 1977. I was totally captivated week after week and heartbroken when the serial ended, with the only access to enjoying it again was reading and re-reading Edith Nesbit’s wonderful book. I even wrote to a certain ex-DJ’s make wishes come true programme asking to meet the Phoenix, no reply. Wonderful this has at last got a DVD release, and yes it all looks a bit twee with cheap BBC 1970’s special effects, the Phoenix now resembles an upgraded Professor Yaffel, but this now pushing 50-year-old child sat misty eyed with a broad grin on his face watching the opening credits of a programme I have waited 42 years to see again. Not sure what kids today would make of it, but highly recommended. Thank you, Simply Media.
