The Ultimate Encyclopedia of Boxing: Seventh Edition Hardcover – February 4, 2014

In my opinion, this is an outstanding publication which would still offer something for boxing fans although is probably best suited to rookies, like me! It is well laid out with chapters on history, rules, administration, trainers, managers, a large honours board, well written paragraph portraits of outstanding boxers ( A-Z ) and more in depth accounts of the famous world champions, like Ali, Tyson, Louis etc... Those with greater knowledge of the sport might be a little frustrated by the editing of the paragraph portraits. For example, under the Max Schmeling entry, no mention was made that he was anti-nazi and that he funded his opponent, Joe Louis when the latter got into debt ( the larger portrait of Louis mentions that President Kennedy wrote off his tax bills ). The paper quality is superb and the selection of photographs is appropriate to the text. Overall, this is a "must have" for anyone with more than a passing interest in the sport of boxing.

This is an excellent book and I am glad that I purchased it. However, if your concept of "Encyclopedic" would mean something on the order of "something on everything", then this book will not meet your expectations. It gives an overview of key figures in the history of boxing. It provides a short history of boxing. It discusses some of the key fights, promoters and managers, etc. Just don't expect it to cover everything. It's not a 21 volume set covering the entire history of boxing.

I like the history of the sport

*First to note: I did not read this book. Long story short: I bought 2 different boxing books (this one included), and upon flipping through the book, though I enjoyed that it had so much information *Yes I know its called the Ultimate Encyclopedia, it was just a little overwhelming. The other book had more pictures and seemed like an easier book to just sit back and be comfortable with, while this one is definitely for those boxing information and stats seekers. (please keep in mind I only bought this as a gift, so my review in no way should reflect the quality/content).

I was so excited to get this... book is what I expected, cover ripped away from spine of book and covered ripped was a turn off and will not be able to use as a a display on my coffee table due to condition.

I am not a Floyd mayweather fan but to only have such a small article on him is a disservice to the history of boxing. Joe calzaghe as well.

If you're a boxing fan as I am you'll like this book. Full of great stats and interesting articles. A great "coffee table book".A great gift for any boxing fan.

Nice book but much of the same as in the last encyclopedia 2012. Wouldn't recommend if you own 2012. Nice pics though
