One of my very favorite books
Beautiful and emotional. Linda Hogan is a great writer and does not hold back here. A wonderful story of women.

Solar Storms - purchased through Amazon
I found this book to be an insight to the enormous trials that have been faced by the First Nation people of northern Manitoba. What we have done and continue to do to these people has no excuse. More of the same is continuing to this day in the destruction of their lives and the environment. I know some of these people and my daughter has done a documentary movie "Green Green Water" [..] on aspects of this tragedy. Little is known or understood of this situation as it is government backed and they spend huge amounts of money to keep it quiet. The bottom line for Manitoba is electricity sold to the USA.It is a well written but dark book as the situations are dark. Although it is a novel, to my experience with these people and this situation it rings true.Mike

Glad I Found This Book Again
I read this book about 8 years ago and it stuck with me ever since. But for some reason when I wanted to recommend it to other people I couldn't ever remember the title or the author. Finally I looked it up here using various key words. Now I can recommend it to others and read it again! It's a book about odysseys--in some way comparable to the book "Cold Mountain" in the sense that people are traveling and finding out who they are in an amazing landscape. This book also represents well the politics and experience of Native American life. It's more than that, though--it's a beautiful story.I consider it one of the best books on my lifetime list.

Challenging, but Worth It
It's not often I have a difficult time with a novel, perhaps because I typically pick entertaining ones that require little expenditure of my tired brain power, but Solar Storms challenged me. Linda Hogan wrote a beautiful story about Native Americans, their relationships with the land and each other, and the evils of greed. It is filled with lyrical descriptions, and is insightful and understanding. The density of the prose and pace of the plot make it a bit slow going - it's not a book you're going to speed read, but it's well worth the effort.

Essential Reading
This is one of my all time favorite books. I've bought several over the years to give to other people because I like it so much. It's a poetic novel, rich with history and wonder. Can't say enough about how incredible it is.

Spiritual
This was a required reading for a women's lit class that I took. Overall this book was good and well written, but at times it was hard to keep interest. I never would have grabbed this book off of a shelf on my own, so I'm glad that I had the opportunity to read it in class. If you are looking for a book in the feminist genre this is a decent one that focuses on spirituality, community, and survival.

Read this book
This lyrical, haunting and ultimately uplifting novel is very hard to describe. I've tried several times to tell others about it and know I've failed to convey the magic that lies between the words. It's a story about five generations of women, it's a story about the building of dams north of Minnesota and the devastation to the animals and people, it's a story about the many facets of the human spirit, both good and evil. But the gem of the tale lies in the connection to Mother Earth. Read the book. Any synopsis doesn't do it justice. It must be experienced firsthand.

Solar Storms
Very thought provoking. This is a story of a young girl who finds herself and becomes whole. Though her people and their land is raped and flooded by the white man, she finds a source of power that no one can touch in herself and the earth. It is a story of healing and truth.
