Gracefully told by Newbery Medalist Virginia Hamilton, this collection of 19 stories focuses on the magical lore and wondrous imaginings of Black women. Vibrant paintings by Caldecott Medallists Leo and Diane Dillon glow with the drama and mystery of each tale while reflecting the warmth and beauty of the people who first told them. Review: Invaluable to Young African Girls - I originally bought this book for myself in an effort to feel more in touch with my roots. I was so amazed at the beauty of the illustrations and the deep cultural significance of the stories. There were one or two that I wonder why they were included in the book, such as "MerWoman in the Sea". Maybe I was being dense but I did not see why the tale was all that special, especially compared to a lot of the other stories. Anway, I passed this on to my younger sister so that she could see beautiful princesses that looked like her. I think it was great for both of us to see that. Review: A fine collection of stories - There is an eclectic mix of stories here that allows for them to offer something for everyone. My daughter likes some and wonders about others, and that's fine. I remember story time when I was little and the books that did this to me. I sought them out again, multiple times, when I became older and could understand more. It brought me great joy and I expect that the same will be true for my daughter. It's even better that the authors will be more similar and relevant for her than they were for me growing up.

BEAUTIFUL BOOK, MEMORABLE STORIES!
I read these stories to my grandkids when they were young so was happy to find the book still in print. They're adults now with kids of their own. They recently mentioned how much they had loved these wonderful, imaginative folk tales and remembered their favorite ones. Now I will read those same stories to my great grandchildren and make even more lovely memories!

Illustratively Beautiful!
Originally purchased this book for my children when they were young from a book club. Found it on Amazon, at a good price point, and purchased it to actually frame the illustrations and art. The stories are sweet and good for young children; but the pictures are really beautiful. So whenever my children have children, I will enjoy reading this book to them, while they can become familiar with the art first! Purchase two, one for reading and the other for framing the art!
