Help! vs. Healthy College Cookbook
There's 2 major challenges to us first-time kitchen owners: learning how to cook and unlearning all those unhealthy eating habits we've picked up.Help! (learning to cook)*difficulty scale: very easy, easy, not so easy*preparation/cooking times: reasonably accurate*mom tips: geared towards avoiding disasters or locating/selecting items in the grocery store*recipes: 104*nutrition info: none and can be heavy on the oil, mayo, and sour cream.*msc: Kevin tries to stick a joke on every page. Most of them aren't funny, but they keep the tone upbeat.Healthy College Cookbook (replacing unhealthy eating habits)*no difficulty scale*limited preparation/cooking time information: super-quick vs not*mom tips: fewer tips/recipe and geared towards making recipes healthier and coping with expiration dates*recipes: 187*nutrition info: calories, fat, protein, carbs, and cholesterol for every recipe*msc: servings are chintzier than in Help! go hungry or plan accordingly. At first, I tried to subsist on The Healthy College Cookbook alone. However, I found the serving sizes too small to feel satisfied. I also wanted more comfort food options to get me through the transition to home cooking. I felt like I had transformed into a rabbit before my tastes had time to adjust. I reverted back to my plain pasta/greasy spoon restaurant routine until I purchased Help! I've stuck with Help! because it's easier to plan grocery shopping and menus when I know how long and difficult a recipe will be and realistically how many servings it will make. Also, nearly everything I make in Help! seems to call for garlic, onions, or canned tomatoes so shopping is more straightforward and perennially in season.

Very good beginner cookbook. Bad Amazon packaging.
I had purchased this cookbook as a gift before and knew it was good for a beginning cook when I bought it. What disappointed me was the Amazon packaging. A 8" x 8-1/2" x 1/2" paperback book does NOT require abox that measures 8" x 8-1/2" x 5" box with 4 air-filled pillows bouncing around in it. A sturdy 9" x 11" envelope would have been much more ecologically sound, cost less, and have taken up significantly less space.

Best cookbook - beginner or not!
My parents bought this cookbook for me and it has turned out to be the best one ever! I love that:1) This book does not assume you already know how to cook, so it explains everything - from cooking terms (tell me I’m not the only person who’s had to Google a term from a cookbook before) to even how to pick out the produce, and the difference between a garlic clove and a garlic bulb.2) The recipes are delicious! Haven’t made a bad one yet.3) The “Mom Tips” are great. If your mom was a good cook, this is what she’d be telling you to help you cook successfully *and* avoid burning the house down in the process.4) It’s hilarious. I love that this cookbook actually has personality.I’ve used this cookbook and I’ve bought it for several people. It’s always a huge hit!

Best Cookbook for those Single, New to Cooking, or for Couples
I first got this cookbook back in 2002, when I went off to college. I've replaced it 4 times because all my friends love it, steel it or accidentally water damage it. lol. This is an excellent cookbook if you are single, learning how too cook or it's you're first time living as a as a couple. The serving size is from 4 to 6, so you don't have to worry about cooking too much. I also love this cook book because it has a list of fairly inexpensive things you need around your kitchen so you don't starve, along with things that would be nice to have. I love these list because it helps me know what stables I need when I go to the grocery store.

Changed my life!
So when I opened the door to my apartment for the first time, I saw that there was a kitchen in it. I was not expecting this because I am not a good cook. So naturally, I was terrified. I didn’t want to leave my office because I was scared to come back to a kitchen: an enigmatic whirlwind of anxiety and uncertainty. THIS book saved my life. Now I’m not afraid of my kitchen and am cooking like a pro. It was super easy to follow and the book assumed I knew absolutely nothing - a great assumption for obvious reasons.

Help! My Apartment has a Kitchen
Kevin and Nancy (authors) make cooking sound approachable and possible. Humor helps the book when the recipe is difficult without belittling the reader. Unexperienced Cooks will enjoy the simple recipes, but may be dismayed at the ones that are "For Company", as they seem unlikely to be used by the college student and seem expensive to prepare. However, the authors do warn the reader which recipes contain expensive ingredients. Photographs would be helpful for the harder recipes as the illistrations are not all that helpful. The book has a nice start in the recipe variety area, but I would like to have culturally different easy recipes. Overall, I would suggest this book to most Beginner Cooks!!

Great book for first-time renters!
Our son loved this book (and is hopefully using it). It's written in a lighthearted way and is the perfect compliment to a gift basket of new home goodies...especially for someone who hasn't done much cooking prior to leaving the nest!
