"We Americans have the dangerous tendency in our international thinking to take a holier-than-thou attitude toward other nations. We consider ourselves to be more noble and decent than other peoples, and consequently in a better position to decide what is right and wrong in the world. What kind of war do civilians suppose we fought, anyway? We shot prisoners in cold blood, wiped out hospitals, strafed lifeboats, killed or mistreated enemy civilians, finished off the enemy wounded, tossed the dying into a hole with the dead, and in the Pacific boiled the flesh off enemy skulls to make table ornaments for sweethearts, or carved their bones into letter openers.... [W]e mutilated the bodies of enemy dead, cutting off their ears and kicking out their gold teeth for souvenirs, and buried them with their testicles in their mouths.... We topped off our saturation bombing and burning of enemy civilians by dropping atomic bombs on two nearly defenseless cities, thereby setting an all-time record for instantaneous mass slaughter. As victors we are privileged to try our defeated opponents for their crimes against humanity; but we should be realistic enough to appreciate that if we were on trial for breaking international laws, we should be found guilty on a dozen counts. We fought a dishonorable war, because morality had a low priority in battle. The tougher the fighting, the less room for decency, and in Pacific contests we saw mankind reach the blackest depths of bestiality." ---- Edgar Jones, WWII Veteran Review: Worth the read! - This is a fine read for anyone interested in the real story of the second world war. You donโt have to be a neo-fascist to appreciate the awful struggle that this fight represented for the German people. Unfortunately the war has been portrayed as a black and white, good versus evil fight, but the behavior of the allies during and after the war is shocking and sobering indeed (or at least it should be). The fact that the red army committed heinous acts is common knowledge but the bad behavior of the allies is much less well known. Poor historians like Stephen Ambrose on the American side are partly to blame as theyโve been more cheerleaders than real historians, which has contributed to a lack of real understanding about this war. Great book- I only wish that there were more openness to this type of dialogue these days. Pick it up soon. It might be banned in the near future. Review: Solid, Well Written Review of the U.S. Treatment of Enemies and POW's During WW2 - This is a very well written and surprising account of how savagely the United States and its allies would treat its enemies during the Second World War. The accounts are graphic, and they help to elicit a sympathetic, humane perspective toward our enemies, Japan and Germany, which I found both refreshing as well as unusual. Did we go too far in our effort to win? Read this book, along with perhaps one or two others, and decide for yourself. Highly recommended. I do by the way think this book is slightly superior to the author's "Hellstorm" on the same topic.

Solid, Well Written Review of the U.S. Treatment of Enemies and POW's During WW2

What was the authors agenda?
War is hell, there is no doubt about that, and people from both side do not always behave in a moral way because of what they have experienced. There was no need for the author to try to make the allies to look as bad as the genocide committed by the Nazis. It is like the author wanted to treat every returned soldier as a war criminal. A religious agenda I expect.

Sickening Shameful Truth
I read this book along with his other on destruction of Germany, HELLSTORM. I could only read so much at a time, I wept so hard I could not see the words to continue. My forebears served in the revolutionary war. I am of founding stock. So I never thought I would say, as I do now, I am ashamed to be an American. There are many ways the American public was fooled into WW2 but the savagery we committed against the women of Germany & Japan goes to an individual level that has no excuse. Extremely hard reading, but a must read to know the truth about the โGood Warโ.

Shocking!
I am sickened by the horrible things in this book. History does indeed go to the victor. There is good reason it is said, war is hell. Do not read this book if you are bothered by graphic and violent material. While it was very difficult for me to read it, I feel all American adults should do so.

Thoroughly researched
I have read dozens of books on WWII and its aftermath. I no longer find material that I have not run into before. Thomas Goodrichโs book is an exception. In considering the fate of POWs I had not realized that less than 1,000 Japanese survived as prisoners. The present climate in our schools and media emphasizes crimes committed by โAmerica.โ These same critics are curiously silent when dealing with this period. In fact they emphasize the good deeds performed after the war. Could it be that an honest account would reflect badly on our โprogressiveโ rulers?

Bravo!
This is an amazing book, written with courage and compassion. It's one of those โEveryone should read thisโ and โIโd give this more than-5-stars if I couldโ kind of books. Itโs obvious that the author has poured his heart and soul into its creation. Thank you and Bravo, Mr. Goodrich. Bravo!

Frightening facts
This book presents a horrific look at allied behavior during and after WW2. The Soviets are well known for their atrocious behavior in eastern Germany but the atrocities and viciousness committed by the American army and to a lesser extent the British, were war crimes and crimes against humanity.

I'm having a great deal of trouble getting through this excellent but extremely troubling book. Any one who reads this follow-up book to His "Hellstorm", must be convinced, without question, that we, what is generally known as the "Allies"(I prefer All-lies), where the actual bad guys of WW2, not the absurdly vilified "Nazi's".
