I think you're thinking of hing (asafoetida). It's commonly used in Indian dishes to substitute for onions & garlic for people who don't eat them because of their Jain religion.

Is this all natural or synthetic salt

The label says "Natural and Kosher". I will tell you that this salt has an unbelievably wonderful taste and smell. I use it very frequently on raw vegetables I eat. I highly recommend it, but my wife does not care for it. She says it is too sulfurous. Just a matter of taste.
