Fisher-Price Soothe & Glow Seahorse, Pink

My one year old received the blue version of this toy as one of his Christmas gifts and payed it little mind in the playroom. When he started having some trouble getting to sleep at around 17 months, we tried offering it to him at bedtime and taught him how to activate it. Huge hit! It’s a great size for cuddling, the music is soothing and soft, and he is enamored with the light. I also really appreciate that it can be machine washed. He turns it on every night when we lay him down in his crib, and I occasionally hear him turn it on in the middle of the night or when he wakes up early in the morning. It has really helped him get to sleep more happily. I highly recommend this toy, with the caveat that it’s not necessarily a sleep miracle for all children. My four year old asked for her own seahorse, so I got her one for Valentines Day. She is good at getting to sleep happily and loves a stuffed animal, so I figured she would be quite satisfied with it. She was, of course, but I did not realized that much of her satisfaction would come from repeatedly activating the seahorse to use as a reading light. I let it go for a few hours before I intervened. Anyway, this toy has been well loved in our house 100% of the time, but only worked well as a sleep aid 50% of the time. Still a great purchase!

This is the BEST soothing "stuffie" for sleeping! My daughter has used it since she was born. My nephew used his blue one FOREVER too. We received one of these as a gift when our son was an infant. It accompanied him to bed and on car rides many times. Then a year or so ago (at age 5), I gave it away, thinking he had lost interest. Silly me. When he would get upset about something, he would say he wished he still had his seahorse. I finally gave in and ordered a new one. I have to say, he probably enjoys it just as much now, at age 6, as he did as an infant/toddler. He says the face is super cute (it is). He takes music lessons and recognizes some of the songs, so it is possibly educational too. We put the volume at the lowest setting (there are only two); the higher one just seems too loud. The glow is soft and comforting at night, not glaring. We had to change the batteries a few times in our old seahorse, but not that often considering how much use it got, so I feel like it doesn't drain batteries very fast--always a plus--and the sound would get distorted before the batteries totally ran out, so we had a bit of warning before we had to change the batteries. Overall, a nice, comforting, musical toy!

We purchased this seahorse based on the glowing reviews it has received, and overall we are satisfied with it. This is one of those toys you have to evaluate while keeping in mind what it IS and IS NOT designed to do. First, here is what this seahorse does: When the power switch is in the "on" position, squeezing the seahorse's plastic belly will make it play about five minutes of music while the belly lights up. There are about 5-6 songs which play with a short pause in between, and there are bubble noises interspersed throughout, and when the music is done the seahorse becomes quiet until its belly is squeezed again. The songs play in the same order each time; think of it like a very short album. The only "option" you have (other than the main power switch) is between two volume settings. You cannot control which songs play, the order of the songs, or when it stops -- but then, that's not really the point of this toy; its purpose is to help soothe your little one to sleep. So to be clear, this is NOT a toy meant for interaction (other than your baby activating the music by squeezing it). It is not supposed to teach your child colors or numbers. It is designed to be simple and comforting, not to have lots of features. And with that goal in mind, it does a reasonable job: 1) It is very soft (aside from the hard plastic belly), so babies like to touch it and cuddle with it. 2) It is a good size for babies to wrap their arms around. 3) It has a very appealing face that babies are drawn to (at least, ours sure is!) 4) It plays fun music. It does, however, have some quirks and design issues: 1) There are pauses between the songs (5 seconds or so), and the start of the next song can come across as a little startling if your baby has already drifted off to sleep. 2) The controls are only accessible by opening up the seahorse's velcro back, which can be a little noisy if it is inches from your baby's head. 3) Each song ends with a significant ritardando (i.e. it slows down). I mean, a SIGNIFICANT one. The end of each song sounds like a music box that is winding down or a toy with... a... dying... [wait for it]..... battery. If you are musical at all like me, this might drive you nuts. Despite its quirks, we are satisfied with this toy -- it's not fancy, but again, simplicity is part of its design. And for the price, it's not a bad deal.

Nana review: We purchased this one (a back-up for Nana's house). She's had the first one since she was probably 4 months old. This one was bought a couple of months later. We are happy with them both. She seems to prefer this pink one over the blue one. Go Figure. It offers volume control, mode option for longer or shorter play, and it quietly shuts off after a time. This saves battery and let's baby sleep unbothered. My grandbaby is a light sleeper. Any noise will wake her. The subtle drop in volume, once it shuts off, doesn't awaken her once she's sleep. Turn it back on at your own risk. LOL It's easy to clean and keep clean. It soothes baby so much to the fact that she knows that when it's on it means to settle down and rest. She will continue to fight her sleep. I don't think there's a toy made that will ever overpower that will of a child. But it works. Baby observation Review: After some time, you can 'condition' your baby to respond positively to this toy for rest or cuddle time. Now that baby is older it's gone from a curious toy she sometimes plays with or listens to for nap and sleep time to a toy she actively seeks to play with and carries around with her. (i.e. it's her toy now and not just Nana's and parents' toy to soothe her with) Will I purchase again? Yes, if needed. Do I recommend it for purchase or gifting? Yes!

Such a great item! We had bought the pink version for my daughter when she was a baby and she loved it so much, we bought the blue one for our son before he was even born. It has sat in his crib since he started sleeping there and we turn it on for every nap and at nightime. It lights up and plays music for about 5 minutes and then the music gets slower and quieter, the light goes dim, and then it all turns off. The music is various lullabies mixed with ocean-type noises. Since he could turn his head, our baby immediately looks at the seahorse as soon as it is turned on. It always quiets him down if he cried when we laid him in the crib. He is now at the point where he reaches out and touches the seahorse and usually falls asleep with his hand on it. When my daughter got older, she would reach over and turn it on herself (pushing on the belly of the seahorse) when she needed it. We took the seahorse on every trip we went on so she had the same thing to fall asleep to no matter where we were. The seahorse takes two AA batteries that are accessed through a strong velcro and plastic door that must be opened with a screwdriver. The inside of the seahorse can be taken out so the fabric portion can be put in the washing machine. There is also a master on/off switch and quiet/loud switch inside the velcro. The only problem is that after many years of use, the painted heart on the plastic belly of the seahorse is rubbing off.

The music is very soothing I use it every time I feed and my baby loves it! I just wish there was an even lower volume setting because at night the at its lowest its a bit loud but other than that im very happy with it.
