Vangogh Watercolor Paint Set, Plastic Pocketbox, 12-Half Pan Specialty Metallic & Interference Colors Selection

Overall I was extremely impressed with these paints and the box they came in. It was a custom molded plastic box unlike any other set I own, with a high quality travel brush and removable palette tray. The colors show up very nicely over darker colors or black paper, though could be mixed with any color of paint to create a shimmer version of that color. The price is comparable to others on the market, but this case and brush does set them apart. I love that Van Gogh paints by Royal Talens have always proven to be very high quality and lightfast. The paint was easily mixed with water and applied with a brush to the tip of my dip-pen nib for calligraphy. The paint flowed effortlessly, allowing for fine details and writing lines, in addition to being a pleasure to paint with. The 12 colors include silver, light gold, bronze, graphite, deep gold, copper and interference blue, yellow, violet, white and red. Unlike the metallic colors which are pretty opaque, the interference colors are nearly invisible on white, but are beautiful over other colors especially black. They do not have an underlying color mixed in like some brands, so do not expect a normal watercolor paint where you can have a solid color wash - these are just the mica shimmer part. Like painting with very very fine glitter. I highly recommend this set and hope you find the photos helpful.

When I first swatched these out on regular 100% white cotton watercolor paper I thought they were beautiful. When I swatched them out in 100% cotton black watercolor paper I was blown away. These colors are so vibrant the picture doesn’t do them justice. I bought these and Winsor & Newton Cotman metallics and the Van Gogh wins hands down. It’s not even close.

This is lovely paint. The metallics are bold and cover well. The shine is noted even when laying flat. The interesting thing about the interference colors are the shift in color viewed from flat to tilted. Please notice the photos showing the complement tone of each interference color. These colors are apparent when not under direct light or tilted. This was a surprise to see a blue swatch looking peach till I tilted it. As I swatched more, each color was the complement. This may or may not be a concern as you use these paints. It does affect the way I plan to use these and them glad I did a swatch before taking brush to finished card. Since I am going to use these as a highlight over top of colored pencil you don’t see the shift when applied over the small pencil swatches. I am pleased with the coverage over the oil/ wax based pencils. I did not think to try them over regular watercolor or as a mix. I will test and update the next time I have my paints out.

These are gorgeous! The metallics are great and have a good variety of shades from copper to silver. The interference colors are super fun and will be great for adding magical effects to my paintings!

A very fun set of metallic and interference colors! They show up great on dark paper. This set is a joy to paint with and the colors are easy to mix. They are housed in a nice sturdy plastic box and a small brush is included. Easy size for traveling with. They are my go-to paints for a bit of sparkle!

This metallic watercolor is very smooth. The colors vibrant. I have several different lines of nice watercolors, and I find that the Van Gogh is as good as the others. Takes a while to arrive, but the owners are super. I recommend it highly.

The watercolors seem fine. But in the order I received, they had doubled up on the blue metallic, and forgot to put in a silver metallic pan. So I decided to return the set and re-order, hoping that I would receive an order with all 12 different colors. So, the quality is fine, but they need to do a better check to make sure that there are 12 different colors in the set.

Good quality paint and with a decent brush

Ich wollte ein paar gute Metallicfarben, ohne dafür allzu viel bezahlen zu müssen. Der Van Gogh Kasten bietet eine schöne Auswahl mit 6 "klassischen" Silber- Gold- und Kupfertönen sowie sechs Interferenzfarben (weiss, rot, gelb, grün, blau, lila). Diese erscheinen je nach Lichteinfall und Untergrund fast unsichtbar perlweiss bis recht intensiv farbig-metallisch leuchtend, was einen sehr hübschen Effekt ergibt. Meine Tochter hatte Spass daran, zu Weihnachten "Wackelkarten" zu malen, deren Lichterketten (Birnen mit Interferenzfarben ausgemalt) sich beim Kippen der Karte ein- und auszuschalten scheinen. Ich empfehle den Kasten eher als Erweiterung für die, die bereits "normale" Aquarellfarben haben, als für Anfänger, die sich ein erstes Set zulegen wollen. Aber auf jeden Fall kann man viel Spaß daran haben!
