A wonderful book
This is a great dog training book. You should have some experience in dog training to fulling understanding all of the material in the book and the book only touches on cart construction so you will need to find another book specifically covering that subject. But it is a wonderful hobby for exercising working breeds who thrive on this type of activity. I know of clubs who exercise Rottweilers and Mastiffs using rid on carts to give the dogs the workout they need. Also as gas prices continue to rise it may again become practical to use dog carts for light farm work for those of you who are into personal micro-farming. Its a green alternative to gas powered vehicles and gets you working with animals that are part of the family. Plus you can begin to teach children the basics of being a teamster working with dogs so that one day they can move up to larger animals.

Prepare for Success
This is a beginner's book that explains, step by step, the preparation needed for successful carting. It starts with obedience basics. Carting equipment & harnesses are described including variations. Photographs complement the text & aid understanding. Terminology is printed in bold which draws attention to the word which is then explained, often with a photo or drawing.Introduction of the dog to the cart is carefully done to make this a postiive experience. Cart pulling, the turns, & backing are taken step by step. After all this work it is time to show off. There are sections about weight training, parades, & competitions once the dog gets used to distractions & an audience, which has its own chapter. A problem-solving section is followed by 5 appendixes. There is a good index.A short biography shows the author to be an experienced trainer. Her concern for the dog's welfare & comfort shows in the text. Positive training techniques are used throughout.I am pleased with this purchase.

Very informative
I really wanted to get my Boxer started in carting, but she refuses to wear the harness. Well, she will wear it, but refuses to pull anything while hooked to it, but if I attach something to her collar she has no problem pulling until she chokes herself. Guess I need a smarter dog. This really is a very good book and an interesting read if nothing else.

wrong book for me
I wanted ideas for turning my wagon into a cool Parade Wagon and tips for handling a my pack of dogs around ignorant people (for the upcoming 4th of July Parade). But, the first several pages warned dog owners NOT to hook a dog up to a wagon without correctly training the dog for this job. I felt criticized because I had gone way past that! I had attached 5 trained livestock dogs and 2 pups to a wagon they were not trained for (all at the same time), and we had fun going up and down the street. As I read page after page, I was berated about how many training steps I had skipped, and how I was supposed to have trained my dogs. I felt so depressed I gave up reading the book before I found out if it answered my 2 questions. By the way, the parade went fine, but we were very hot! While it was the wrong book for me, it might be the right book for you.

Absolutely Perfect!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!I was referred to this book by an experienced Drafting and Berner person.I had absolutely no experience with drafting or carting, though my dog, Dino, a Mixed Breed, had done weight pull in the past. With the help from this book and the regular practices with the local Berner group, we were able to pass our first Draft test this past Saturday, making Dino the first Mixed Breed to earn the Novice Draft Dog title! What I also liked about this book is the emphasis on clicker and positive training, since this was the ONLY type of training Dino knows about. He has never worn a chain or pinch collar and had not received any physical corrections.Highly recommended!
