Very honest and inspiring
Beneath the Muscle is the autobiographic story of multi-faceted Lauren Powers. Although she has been a pro-skater, event planner, saleswoman, among other things, she is mostly known for having conquered the world of bodybuilding after reaching forty years old. (which is extremely rare for newbies in this field).I felt that more than a self-book, Beneath the Muscle feels like an honest, true, confession of a strong woman who acknowledges the factors determining her success in life: her close relationship with her family, her determination, her overcoming a very dark valley in her youth and her willingness to accept that everyone needs help at some point. Including someone as strong as her.I honestly believe she wrote this book as a catharsis, and while she gives good pointers, the best part of it is the ability she has to transmit her strong character and demeanor and inspire others in the pursuit of their dreams.

Do what you say, say what you mean and follow through
A mantra worth taking. And I think it also sums up this author and this book rather well.I don't know what rock I've been living under but I actually hadn't ever registered who this author is (though I've seen a few things she's been in) however for whatever reason it never clicked that she's famous or that she's was a bodybuilder (no, not blind to her muscles but I guess I didn't assume that muscles=profession). But as it were, I read the description and though the whole “motivational book” thing didn't particularly sway me, the biographical aspects did. So I gave it a go.It was interesting.I've read a few biographies/autobiographies in my day and this one was okay. It was less a memoir or a “real” biography and more like someone casually telling their life story with a few pictures thrown in (I.E. casual autobiography). It was conversational and like I said, interesting. Her life is more or less what I'd imagined but I'll admit that one thing *really* surprised me: she'd been deep in the dark side of drugs. Wow. I “knew” she'd had some shady things in her past but like, just wow. To have overcome *that* is pretty darn impressive.Anyway, nothing else to really say about the life story part, though I will point out that in the preface it said that the book was in two parts. The first being the biographical part and the second was suppose to be actionable advice. However there was actually no discernible separation in “parts”, there was no “Part I” or “Part II” sheets. That said, it's no deal breaker for me as I actually think the chapters flow smoothly from one to the next. Though if anyone wants the reference I'd say that “part 1” ends at about the middle of chapter 6.Another detail I'd not necessarily call a con, but it isn't quite a pro for me, is that at the end of EVERY chapter there's the “reminder” to go get the workbook that supposedly accompanies this book, however when I actually went to the site it claims 404 error. I don't know if it's due to the book being a new release (as the actual base website works just fine) or if it's something else, but I don't really appreciate having a constant reminder of a book that I can't at the moment get. It's tiresome and repetitive but I suppose that if someone read this 'a chapter a day' or something like that (instead of in a day like I did) then maybe the reminder would be welcome. Personally I only found it annoying. Again, not a deal breaker but definitely **got annoying** to see the exact same closing lines after each chapter. But other than that, I thought this book was great. I especially liked the pictures throughout and the ones at the end.Overall I can only rate this book at 5 stars since it does indeed include what it claims. It was a collection of experiences and lessons that are worded in such a way as to be motivational, inspiring and it gives a lot of advice. I can't personally call all of it *good* advice but I certainly appreciate where it's coming from and it's food for thought.I would recommend this book to anyone who knows of and likes Lauren Powers and would like to know more about her. I'd also likely recommend this to someone who's looking for motivation/inspiration and would feel encourage by someone who didn't give up. Her story is certainly worth reading about.

Not just for fitness lovers! Fantastic inspirational book
Like many others, I find the world of "fitness" to be pretty intimidating, but I've been working on making a change in that department. I picked up Lauren's book because I liked the idea of fitness success having more to do with where you start mentally than physically, and I have to say the book is everything I was hoping it would be!Also, I think it's important to point out that even if the challenges you're facing aren't fitness related, you'll find Lauren to be very inspiring. While her fitness journey obviously contributes a lot to the narrative, the overall "point" of the book isn't just about fitness. It's about believing in yourself and accomplishing your goals, and it's written in a very accessible, down to earth way that I think practically everyone can identify with.
